After owning a compact point and shoot (the sx40) for a while i upgraded to my first dslr! :D I bought the t3i with the kit lens 2 days ago but I'm finding it hard to use the onboard flash. My sx40 had the option to control the flash level and i cant seem to find anything like that on the t3i? Also can anyone reccomend a good offboard flash that's not overly expensive for the t3i?

I want to expand my skills using flash but its all so overwhelming

Thanks!

Don't have the manual with me at the moment, but look for flash exposure compensation and how to adjust it.

^^ Flash exposure comp or adjust your aperture in M or Av mode.... also the 430 EX II is a great hot shoe mounted flash.

Flash exposure compensation is explained on page 104 of the manual. FEC can't be set in the pre-programmed modes, i.e., Portrait, Sports, etc. You can only adjust flash output when using 'Creative Zone' modes (P, Av, Tv, M).

If you are still in the beginner part of the wheel you basically have no control over anything and those options don't even show up in the menus. The 430 EX II is a fantastic flash, and it supports wireless mode for when you decide to get really daring.

It's under Flash exposure compensation. Goes from -2 to +2. Magic Lantern Firmware will let you control it even more than that.
