I have an old Canon 100/2.8 macro that is non-L, non-is and was wondering if there are 1.4 teleconverters out there that would work with this lens? Instead of buying a new 180 macro I figured this was a cheaper way to increase the distance without breaking the bank. Thank you for any and all help.

The measure of a man is not how many times he gets knocked down..but how many times he gets back up.

I'm not sure if it will matter, but is your lens the USM one or the earlier version?

Have a read of the tcon sticky. I don't think a Canon tcon will mount.

Off brand (Kenko, Sigmas without the protruding element, Tamron, etc...) TCs will work, the Canon TCs will not work on the USM or pre-USM 100mm macros.

Forgot to add:
I don't know if the Sigma (with the protruding lens elements) will fit or not. It doesn't stick out as far as Canon's, but it does stick out in some versions.

I just checked.

The Sigma APO Teleconverter 1.4x DG doesn't fit the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro (not USM). The original 100 macro has the rear element right close to the rear surface.

The Sigma 1.4 does fit the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM if you mount it carefully. The rear element is a recessed enough and doesn't hit the TC as it moves during focusing from infinity to 1:1. The TC won't be reported however since the lens doesn't have the extra contacts for the teleconverter.

The Kenko Pro 1.4X fits the old non-usm (so does the Kenko Pro 2X).

You can utilize the 100mm f/2.8 Canon Macro + a Canon 1.4x TC if you also use a extension tube between the lens and the TC. That will give you higher magnification than the lens alone but, you will lose infinity focus capability (as you would when using the tube alone).

This is a great point. RPCrowe forgot to mention, this is awesome when doing macro photography. But not for being able to switch to "regular" range photography. For instance you are in the forest quietly getting shots of a beetle and all of a sudden a 12-point buck walks out of the brush 20 feet from you. You will not be bale to get that extension off before the buck runs off. (No unfortunately that opportunity has never happened to me. Or would that be fortunately?).

That is one of the reasons I went Kenko for teleextenders. But if you already have a Canon or Sigma extender, an extension tube is a very good way (and relatively inexpensive) to still be able use your TC (though only for macro).
