Trying to decide between the two lenses. The Canon is about $100 cheaper, and from everything that i read is more reliable than the Sigma with less focusing issues etc.

The Sigma on the other hand has earned the tag Sigmalux, and seems to have a slightly wider wide open aperture than they market it as, some reviews claiming as good as f/1.2

So, thoughts on which one to go for?

When the Siggy actually focuses, it's beautiful. Mine is on it's second trip to Sigma NY 3:<

Yeah, I've heard of those issues. I think if i got the Sigma it would be an Australian copy so i can return it when needed.

I owned both, I love the sigma. That is once your copy is perfect.

Yep, same here, I sold my Canon to buy the Sigma. The first copy was a dud so I swapped it and the second copy is just terrific. I do not regret selling my Canon and going Sigma.

I bought the sigma today and I had the canon before. Just the build quality difference is worth it.

I've got the Canon; I have not tried the Sigma. It's a very nice lens. It's acceptably sharp wide open, and very sharp from f/2.8. Bokeh isn't bad either. I'm happy.

This was shot at f/1.6 on a 5D. I focused on the left eye, and his head is turned so the right eye isn't perfectly in focus.

The sigma 50 is better than the canon in every way. Factor in a trip to sigma service in new york that includes both your dslr body and lens to be sure when they both come back they will be calibrated to each other.
Now you may not have to do that but it's a possibility so be prepared to do so. The reason you should send both body/lens together is so sigma can be certain when making the lens adjustments that the camera and lens tolerances are in sync with each other.

Believe this though that once they are optimized and in sync with each other that the sigma 50 is as good as the canon 135l in bokehlicious quality and sharpness.

Yes, it is a prime lens. Now it would be something to have a f1.4 zoom lens...

I took the Sigma route also, and returned the lens to the vendor for another lottery draw. Lens was front focus.

yes, as it's a fixed-focal length lens: 50mm

I use the sigma 50mm paired to my 5d2 as my go-to, do everything that isn't landscape or architecture, lens. It's served me admirably.

10/10, would buy again.

here's a good review that reaches the same conclusion and compares the sigma to the canon 50s.

I'd go for the sigma in this case... :)
