Last week I was asked to take some pictures for this small festival where I live, I was only making $120 but since I was planning on taking pictures anyway, it worked out to my advantage. So I went around, took photos for a few hours, and then went and locked my camera up in the trunk of my car so I could enjoy the rest of the day. Long story short, someone broke into my car, popped the trunk, and stole my iPod, and camera. Of course I was pissed. My camera was gone!! I filed a police report and all that good stuff, but I was certain my camera was gone forever.
Fast forward to yesterday…I get a message on Facebook from a buddy of mine with a link to someones profile. This certain person happened to be mutual Facebook friends with a friend, of a friend, of my friend. This person recently upload an album thru iPhoto. In this album were pictures of him and his friends, but also the pictures I took at the festival, pictures of my daughter, pictures of my brothers, pictures of my new house, etc…I guess he didn't think to delete anything and imported all the photos from my SD card into an iPhoto album, and on to Facebook. Anyway, this mutual friend of my friend contacted this guy, told him he "loved his work", and wanted to pay him $300 to take some portraits for him. I was there when he showed up (completely with my camera bag strapped to his back), with plenty of proof that the camera was mine, I barely confronted him and he handed the camera over. He started crying and apologizing and begging/bribing me not to call the cops. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle, and all I really cared about was getting my camera back. At least I have an awesome story.

You just can't fix stupid (reference to the thief). LOL....Glad you got it back.

You were very lucky. If it were me, the other guy would not be soo lucky. People need to be held accountable. Part of the problem in this country now

Yeah, I would have had the cops show up shortly thereafter.

I'm thinking I'm going to do that. I just got back less than an hour ago and everyone told me to go back to the police.

Cops would have found him on the ground after tripping over a tall curb...

I would have considered bringing intense pain upon his body that would never have gone away.

admirable that you offered him forgivness and moved on. But as someone said, he'll probably not learn a lesson and do it again. So, as it is with raising children, its tough to be the "bad guy" to do what must be done so they learn something. So, i'd suggest at least reporting it and let him get hauled in. At least that way, if you decide to not press charges, he'll be fingerprinted and a little dose of reality "might" go a long way.

Isn't assault a crime worse than theft? Thief or not, they could haul YOU into court and have YOU sent to jail or be made to pay hefty damages, hospital & doctor bills, attorney fees...

Make sure all their "friends" know about it. Publicly, on facebook. Be certain to just state the facts, no name calling, defamation, slander, etc., or YOU can get in big legal troubles. If they still live at home, involve the parents. Work out some sort of retribution. Have them work for you for free for a day or two.

Involve the police only as a last resort...

Yes. Brilliant. Have the guy who just stole your stuff hang around you and your stuff all day.

I think it is a bad idea to confront a thief like you did. What if he went crazy and assulted you or pulled a gun.

If he was stupid enough to post your photos with his, you neve know what could have happened.
