Single Speedlight off-camera in the studio with a bunch of modifiers. The white b/g is not synthetic. :)

I've seen you posting multipe shots of this fella... have you considered some serious under-light or on-axis fill to tone down the bags under his eyes? Just a thought...

Bags would be gone with several good nights of sleep or knocking off 30 years—neither happening any time soon! It does explain the casting-call failure with L'Oréal. :) Clamshell is the common solution, although I think of it as feminine lighting. Anyway, older guys are supposed to have some character, right?

How did you get the b/g so white?

Actually, that was the goal of this lighting scheme, although I'm not a fan of bone-white backgrounds. Global curve was used, but no masking. A Speedlight near full power was bounced off white foamcore, allowing one source to serve as key, fill, and b/g by channeling the light spray. The b/g was more foamcore, with illumination level balanced first. Subject was then too bright by far, so subject illumination was cut with a 2x scrim. Fill was ambient throughout the studio due to stray light, so a flag was used to block one side of the subject (subtractive lighting). Using a small white b/g against a large black backdrop prevented wrapping of the subject.
