Umbrellas are the cheapest way to get a big soft light source, which is what most people new to off camera flash are looking for. Softboxes do offer the ability to control spill, but to get a softbox the same size as a 40 inch shoot through umbrella for equivalent softness is roughly 4x the cost. Start with the umbrella and go from there. Eventually you are going to want them both anyway.

I got the cheap Cowboy Studio stand/umbrella/bracket and for the price starting out it is hard to beat. Is it heavy duty? No. Will it work to learn? Yes. I mean even if you tear it up I think the 33" shoot through was $4 shipped. The stand is around $15 and the bracket was a couple more bucks. Amazon has the stuff, or if you don't mind waiting for shipping from China you can typically get the stuff dirt cheap on eBay.

Thanks guys.. I should have said I plan on doing more location shoots, on the mtns, waterfalls.. white sands NM area... I'm thinking I will start with a cheaper coyboy kit and see how I like shooting with them.. I usually don't shoot people, as this is more of a hobby for my wife and I, she has a 60d too. But I bought a 6d last month and said if I'm going to spend this kind of money I better start shooting some paying gigs to help supplement my addiction... well I tried the 6d and decided I was just going to keep my 60d and return the 6d for now.. I tried two bodies/kits.. and both 24-105s were soft on them, and the sigma 50 I bought was off too.. so I figure Ill just keep my kit of lenses that I finally got all sharp copies and just keep learning stuff until I can justify spending 3k+ on a new kit and lenses. Plus that 6d, doesn't have wireless flash control like the 60d and I really like that, vs spending money on other stuff. Here are a few pix of what I normally shoot.

Thanks again for all the input.

So I finally had time to go out and mess around with my flash off the camera today, I still need to order some umbrellas and stuff, but I figured I might as well go out and just play with angles and stuff.

Here are a few of my wife.

You're kicking yourself, right? An umbrella, stand, and the 622s would have made for an even more gooder shot. ;)

Thanks. The flash was a 580exII inside a cheap fotodiox shoot through umbrella box. Since I was trying for balance with the ambient all I was looking at was fill so it was probably low power.

It was this cheapo brollybox that I carry in my truck for the occasional unplanned occasions. http://www.amazon.com …keywords=umbrella+softbox (external link)

So Just got my lens and for almost the first time EVER I have been shocked in a good way over a sigma lens! ( The new Sigma 17-70 Contemporary) This lens is SHARP! I have gone thru 25+ lenses and this one just blew me away out of the box.

Just a few quick shots trying out my new flash toys...

First a grid for my flash.
