Absolutely gorgeous result. I'm astonished. So much, I'm considering that modifier as my next purchase. Wow. Just one speedlite eh?! So impressed.

Thanks. Appreciate the kind words. Nice work with the Heidi Jo photo. Wouldn't have thought that a speedlight ca fill up a 60 inch umbrella. Nice job.

If you move the umbrella far enough from the speedlight,it can.
Here is a set up shot I did using the 60' umbrella as a shoot through and a bare speedlight for rim.

Thanks Ken

would any of you guys be satisfied with a Yongnuo YN560 + a bouncer or softbox as their only flash for a long while? I'm not exactly sure what it means - the fact that it doesn't have TTL.. does this mean it has to be manually set each time? (every scene). The flash is only $45..

Most, if not all, of my off camera flash shots are shot using the flash in manual mode. While TTL is great for on camera flash work, it becomes less important in off camera flash work. For $45, it's a great way to get into flash photography. I say go for it.

I just wanted to add to this... I own a canon 580EX II as well as a YN-560 and use them both off camera 90+% of the time. I can't honestly remember the last time I used eTTL. With that said, I say go for it! I love my cheap YN-560!

I mentioned in my previous post that I have phottix odin ETTL triggers. I still do most of my off-camera in manual...I'm just lazy, so I like the fact I can change power settings on my 580 EX II from the control unit on my camera instead of walking over to it and changing it manually

An older picture I took using a single 580exII in a qbox24 soft box:

I agree.

TTL is useful when the flash to subject distance is changing rapidly. When you place a speedlite (or any flash) on a stand it tends to stay in a relatively stable relationship with the subject. ETTL on camera is useful for fill because its easy to dial up and down with FEC.

Think of a speedlite off camera as a mini-monolight.

I have 3 YN-560s and use them mixed with Canon ETTL capable speedlites all the time.

Just found this thread. Love to see shot with just speedights. I have a couple YN-560's but never use more than one at a time. Just bought a 24x24 softbox, not here yet. Been using an ubbrella or bare light.

me too. is it some sort of lantern or flashlight behind the tent?

I've read mixed reviews about the YN560. Amazon reviews seem fine, but I think it was some earlier reviews on some website that was saying how quality control for these flashes are horrendous and resellers were getting screwed because even they had 30 days to send it back to the manufacturer if defective..

Yes, there was a lantern outside behind the tent that they were using to help with reading. I just stuck the flash in there and fired it with the yn-603. Easy as pie.

In terms of the yn-560, I wouldn't hesitate. It is what it is, it's cheap. You should be able to grab one for about 60 bucks. Odds are you will totally get your money's worth and learn a ton while doing so.
