Thanks all.
I have the E700 in my cart. B & H is shut till 9:45 pm eastern so I'll wait till then to order it.
Thank you very much Lloyd for the photo, and thank you Hermes for the confirmation that this is the best solution. It'll be a little weird that my gear will be used while hanging upside-down, but what the hey. If this is what it takes to boom properly, then I'm over caring about upside-down.
Hermes, could you by chance post a photo of the D200 grip head on the Octa? I would like to see this set-up and will probably want to make the mod. As it is, I've stripped the wing-nut threads on my Octa mount and maybe your work-around would eliminate the necessity of swapping it out???
K.C., I've never used Matthews gear, but I have to say that this is the first disappointment I've experienced with Avenger during my six years of using it. It kind of sounds like I need to take some of the blame for the incompatibility though. I'm up here in far northern California and there's no one within a hundred and fifty miles of me who has this stuff, and who I could plagiarize from. So, this is the first I've heard of the "flat pin head" vs "Pointy pin head". But, I do appreciate your opinion. I find it very interesting.
Thanks all once again.

Chris, I can't take credit for the D200 mod. It's been around for ages. The links above should see you alright. It's a very simple change and can be reversed if you want (though I don't know why you would). Ever since I modded mine and made a grid for it I've been using the Octa more and more - back when it was grid-less and I was using the original Elinchrom stand mount I considered it unusable for a lot of applications.
If you want to keep using the avenger pins you have, like I said it's a very easy job to grind them down to a usable height. I've done it with a hand file before although a grinding wheel will do it instantly.
TBH I haven't been on here in a long time - popped back for a bit of lens info and to look through the classifieds. Where are the lighting and grip gurus (thinking of Rob and Dave in particular) who know this stuff a lot better than me?
