Lately I have been looking at vintage lenses and so far Ive had great results with them, specially at 50mm. Now, which would be the best telephoto lens with M-42 mount? I'm talking one in the 500-600mm range.

Many people say good things about the Prakticar 500mm f/5.6 Pentacon:

Looks great but a little out of the budget I was thinking of.

There is also a Pentacon 600mm f/5.6 that is much less expensive:

More like it! Ive seen similar lens go for less though. I will keep watching them. I would not like to buy from Europe, Japan, China...etc I feel better when I do business over this part of the world.

Any more suggestions?

Probably you could get a Novoflex 400/5.6 with M42 mount on it.
Not very good but very much made: 500/8 with T2 mount. With a T2-M42 adapter this would work. But very slow f-number, and I suppose not bes quality.

For M42 there are not many long tele lenses made.
Canon FD or Nikon F-mount would be much easier, there are many good lenses!

If thats the case I would consider FD lenses too. I happen to have a decent FD to EF adapter with focus confirmation. Suggestions for FD telephoto lenses welcome?

Have a look at the Canon Lens Museum (external link) for New FD, FD, and FL lenses.

I once had a look at a Fujica Fujinon 600mm f/5.6 at a very reasonable price. That might be a good one to look out for, and faster than the average budget lens at this focal length.

Mark.

With that adapter you have a bad quality lens inside, or no longer infinity I guess.

FD 500/8 mirror
FD 600/4.5 SSC
Canon FD 500/4.5L (very good lens)
