Here's a pic of an old EF L series 100-300 1:5.6 zoom lens that a pro friend handed down to me. Does anyone know what tripod mount ring I need for this lens? My friend told me she didn't use a tripod mount with it and mostly shot hand-held, but on my Rebel 300D it feels very unbalanced and sometimes the rig just slips out of alignment as I'm adjusting it.

AFAIK there is no tripod collar for this lens :(. Canon manufactures two tripod collars (in two colors :) ). Details can be found at: http://www.bobatkins.com …hp/EOS/CanonTripodCollars (external link)

I was afraid of that. Might have to rig something myself. Maybe one of those Canon rings will fit or can be adapted to fit. Are there any adjustable, general purpose mounts that are designed to fit different lenses?

... get a more sturdy tripod :o

Take a look at this image from a lens of the same time that was designed to be used with the tripod collar:

IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

You see that there is an area on the lens where the collar can be fixed.
I'm afraid it won't keep very well on your lens (which is otherwise great).

Even worse ... it will interfere with the working of the zoom mechanism, right?
And finally, this lens is about twice the weight of your lens, so I assume your lens should be safe when mounted on the tripod via the camera.

Best regards,
Andy

I think better/sturdier tripod head will do the job.

A Manfrotto 3030 isn't exactly a cheap head, I have one it's quite nice supports my L's just fine.

Thanks for comments, Andy. You are the third knowledgeable person who has told me that the lens is not so heavy that a tripod mount ring is necessary. The size and heft of the lens hanging off the front of my Rebel just creep me out, but there must be a reason that no ring was made for this lens. I'll just try using it with the camera mounted to the tripod and get a heavier-duty head if needed.

I see the difference in the two lenses and where the mount ring should go. I didn't really know where the ring would have gone, but now I see that my lens just has no place to put one. My tripod is sturdy enough but I think I have been hesitant to tighten the head with sufficient force when adjusting.

Thanks for comments. I think at worst I'll need a new head. The 3030 needs to be really tightened with the leverage this lens applies to the rig, but seems solid enough otherwise to withstand the load. I'm afraid that if I tighten the head handles too much I'll lose the ability to make it as tight as I want and be left with only completely loose or completely tight. I'm going to just try tightening the head as much as required for stability, even if really tight. If I need a new head, so be it...

I was going to make up a tripod mount for that model when i had it but it just wasn't worth it for me.
As you've found there is precious little space for anything to fit.The design i intended to make was going to mount near the back of the lens and had a stepped internal shape to fit snugly.Even then it was clamped to mostly plastic parts so it was far from ideal.

If you do decide to make one,try to find a tripod mount off a large old lens and modify that to fit.The canon genuine tripod mounts cost heaps.

I did once see someone on the net that made and sold special tripod mounts for this model but it was very dodgey. I think it fitted around the zoom collar (not much wrong with that) but it used lots of padding so it wasn't much use.

Thanks for good tips. I think I'll check out a few local shops which sell used stuff. Maybe I can find an old mount.

Where would one buy a collar anyway? B&H doesn't have them for sale that I've found, and there aren't any on the ol' ebay, so?

They are not sold for general purpose use.The best candidates would be ones off really old long lenses
It would be a case of checking out the secondhand shops and measuring. Ebay could be usefull

If this helps........the following lens has a really nice removable mount. The maximum inside diameter is 72mm with no real room to carve it out further. It could be sleeved smaller though

I just aquired a vivitar series 1 70-210/2.8 -basically a sigma with a different brand name on it(the cosmetics are slightly different)
I've read that there are different versions-this is the 82mm filter version, probably the second version back from the sigma 70-200 EX and three versions back from the current DG.
There is also a quantaray branded one that is identical to my vivitar

The reason i mention these is that they are now dying out because they can't be rechipped to work with newer cameras (i think) ,so you may be able to get an owner to part with one cheaply.
