Best Canon camera for filming?

Hey everyone,

I have a 5D Mark II and now it seems the 5D Mark III, 1D Mark III, and the 1D Mark IV. I've been too busy with work and not up to date with everything that's been going on in the SLR world.

However, I've been busy writing a feature and we want to use Canon's DSLR's to shoot it. Anyone have thoughts on what camera is best to shoot for film? I'm looking for good focus, frame rate options, and obviously wonderful picture.

Thanks.

J

Youre going to want to go with either a 5d mk II or 5d mk III for your video usage. that or you could go with Canon's new c100 (or whatever they are calling it.)

No, no. We'll have a Camera Op and AC for focus and movement.

All cameras mentioned are digital, not one uses film. Did I miss something?

I'm sorry. I didn't mean shoot "FILM." I mean shoot (aka film). I know it is all digital - the world can't be perfect ha.

lol @ everyone being Politically Correct, You know what he meant by the Description of the Topic.

As far AS the Topic. 5D Mark III is your Best choice, Than look at Magic Lantern Firmware for enhancing it even more.

5diii gives you crazy ISO ability, is very sharp (note Phillip Bloom's review on how to get the best IQ), and all but eliminates moire. Its the best HDSLR Canon makes if you don't want to shell out for the C100.
The 5dii is still very good and will do the job fine of course. Don't think that you can't get good video quality from the 7d,60d,T3i,T2i sensored cameras either.

"Politically" correct? What does politics have to do with anything in this thread?

"Politically correct" is not the same as just "correct." Film v digital DOES come up a lot here.

Again, I'm sorry for any confusion. I know what the D in DSLR stands for and that these things aren't shooting 35mm.

That being said, I'm just looking for the best camera on the market to get a quality that almost resembles film - I love the 5D's look, but I didn't know if the 5D Mark III's was better or not (I would imagine it is).

Also, does anyone think I should just wait for the 1D C?

Thanks.

Rent an ARRI Alexa. :-P (I'm actually only half joking...they are probably the all-around best digital cinema camera system out there right now.)

If you have your heart set on using a DSLR, out of what's currently on the market, I'd say just use a 5DmkIII, I'm sure it would work great once you get the package dialed in. But, if you are considering seriously springing for a C100, you also should look into a RED camera like the Scarlet or Epic.

1DC would be your best bet if you want to stick with SLR type camera bodies. It shoots at 4K video and should be able to blow any 1080p res video recording SLR out the water.
