I have a Canon T3 and I have taken some photos that I would like to submit for critiques. I have noticed that most if not all photos have a watermark on them. I assume it's to keep folks from reusing the photos and claiming them as their own.

I have a MacBook Pro with IPhoto. How do I put a watermark on my photos?

Just starting out and just using what I have available to me. If someone can help me, I'd be appreciative. I enjoy lurking and looking at everyone's fantastic pics.

There are lots of ways to watermark photos. Some hosting sites, like Zenfolio, will do it on the fly.

A better question is do you need to. Don't let not having watermarks stop you from posting here for sharing or asking questions. If your photo is good enough to steal someone will figure out how to remove the watermark and it won't matter anyway.

The only watermarks that will help keep your images from being used are those that go right across the main part of the shot and tend to make the image hard to look at. The ones where the photographer has put their name at the bottom are simple to crop off, so won't stop the image being used. If you do put one right across the middle of the shot and ask for critique, the main comment will likely be "don't slap a watermark across the main interest as we can't see it properly".

I'm not trying to insult your work (I haven't seen any, so it may be amazing, I don't know) but if you are a newbie, just starting out, the odds are that you haven't produced much that is likely to be stolen and used by somebody else anyway.

I don't usually watermark my images, especially not when sharing them on internet forums like this one. If a photo happens to be stolen, I still have got the rights of the photo regardless of whether it was watermarked/signed or not in the first place. It's not a more serious crime if the watermark was removed than to steal a photo without.

Maybe not in Sweden, but in the US, it carries additional penalties if a watermark is stripped.

I never know if iPhoto has that feature, but photoshop / lightroom do have if you have them installed. Or else there's some free photo-editing websites that offer to put watermarks too.

Thanks so much for the info on watermarks. I may look into the programs that were mentioned.

Really? Then it makes more sense why 95% of all US photographers use watermarks/logos on their photos.

Oh, interesting!
