Hey guys.. Here is the problem.
it seems I am having random photos and video go missing from my 5dmk2 and my 50d
I have several high quality sandisk extreme 3 flash cards, the problem is occuring regardless which I use.. and I have several computers

I cannot isolate the issue to anything in particular

So the situation is happening with the 5dmk2
the 50d
a variety of flash cards.. including sandisk and lexmark all purchased from PRA at full price (no dodgy ebay cards)
and several computers

so my camera will show the photos or video.. when I plug card into the computer, bunches of photos or a video file or 2 will be missing

ie IMG_5044, IMG_5055 THEN IMG_5065 SO 9-10 IMAGES MISSING

I've tried googling the issue..
evidentally since I've had the problem with the 5d (which the old post was about) and I'm in America right now today using my 50d.. when I wrote the previous thread I was using a i73300 PC with a 32 gig sandisk extreme 3.. right now I'm using my laptop with a 16gig sandisk..

This means I can't isolate the issue to a single card, a single camera, OR a single computer.. so what does that leave?

I'd really appreciate help of any kind.
I doubt both my cameras would be dodgy at once, and all my cards own't be at once either

Just to reiterate, just put the card back into the camera.. and all the missing photos are showing. but plugging the card into the PC.. they aren't...

I have no idea what it is.. help appreciated

Are you using the same card reader with the separate computers?

Have you set your computer program to ignore suspected duplicate files?

Are the missing files RAW files? Are the missing files you may have deleted in camera?

Have you ever formatted any of your cards in camera?

Have you tried downloading via EOS utility with the camera attached.

You'll need to take a methodical, stepwise approach. Try first to see if you can read and write to/from the card from the PC without using the camera:

- Full format (not quick) of one of the cards using the computer then copy files to it. Check you can still read them back. If not, then you have a problem with the computer/caard reader. Try:
- Changing the card reader - that's the most likely problem.
- Changing the way that you view the files on the card - try using a DOS box and the 'DIR' command (I assume you're. using Windows).
- Updating the drivers for the card reader.

If you still have a problem, then try reading the files from the camera using a USB cable and the EOS utility. If that works, then I'f bet that you have some issue with the card reader or its drivers.

If you can read/write files on the computer, but still have issues with files from the camera (after using a newly formatted card), then try:

- Reading the files from the camera using a USB cable and the EOS utility.
- Taking a good look at the pins in the camera. I know you have two cameras with the problem, but it's just possible that a damaged card has damaged the pins in both the cameras. Unlikely, but worth a look.

Hope this helps.

Sadly no it doesn't help.. But I appreciate you trying.
Last week I full formated all of my cards in my computer.
I also ran a disk check in 'my computer'
No problem showed in any of the cards.
I am on holidays in America at the moment, and I have my Asus computer, Canon 50d computer, and Soniq card reader.
At home in Australia I usually use a Canon 5dmk2, a i73300 and a Lexpro or Lexmar?? card reader..
I've had the problem accross different card readers, different cards, different computers, different cameras.

I have no idea how to isolate the issue..???
I could try purchasing a new card reader today and see if that makes the difference... but I posted a thread elsewhere about having some files disappear.. (large video files) in another forum.. and that was april.. and I definately wasn't using this card reader then becuase this one is literallymy travel one..

**** I DO NOT KNOW what a dos box or dir command are.. any help there?
I don't have the camera cable. thats back in australia. I don't normally import that way as its so insanely slow.
Ive been shooting with these cameras for 3 years and never had this issue until april.

I have a 'soniq' card reader on me.. because its handier for travel, at home I use a Lexmar?? card reader.. so I'm not using the same card reader so I don't think I can isolate the issue to that either.

It's not the usb card because as I said.. at home I'm using a i73300 and all I have with me in america is my laptop with is a Asus.. so I can't isolate it to a port issue either.

It's 9am here now.. I left 'ddr pen drive recovery' running overnight.. but again the missing images just aren't showing up.

I've found a website that recommends www.filehippo.com/download_recuva (external link)
so I've downloaded that and will try that now.

in the meantime I can't use myc ards for anything else :(

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH.. PLEASE KEEP THE HELPFUL REPLIES COMIN

OK - have you tried just copying some JPG files to the card and then trying to view then again? Do you see all the files you copied?

What is the operating system on the Asus?

On Win7 you press the Windows button, then click on "run". Type 'cmd' - that's a dos box.

Assume that your card reader shows up as drive F - navigate to F: in the dos box (just by typing 'f:'
Then the command DIR should show the content of that drive. if it's a 5d you may have to go to f:\dcim\100eos5d\ or what ever - that's the default
