Need some advice on lenses

Hey, I'm new to this forum.
I actually registered to ask for advice on lenses.

I'm about to buy a 5dii and I'm not sure about the choice of lenses. I always shot with prime lenses so I was not looking at zoom lenses at all.
So far I want to get the 35L but I'm having a dilemma on which tele I want to buy.
I was thinking of the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 or the 100mmL f/2.8.

I think the fact the L is also a Macro lens could be really useful. On the other side the samples I saw of the Sigma wide open are beautiful.

What would you choose?

I would go for 100L not because i have it, but rather it is useful for both macro and portrait photographys. IQ is really great and i never regretted owning the 100L. 85 is close to 100 focal length however if i really want the 85 range in the future, i would just add canon's 85 1.8 on top of 100L.

I used to own both (only has 100L now). Like hanjolee said, 100L is sharp and can do macro, BUT if you need fast aperture, you need fast aperture. There's really no comparison.

Oh and I used to own the Canon 85 1.8 too, and it's not in the same league as the Sigma, not remotely close....

The Sigma 85 rivals the L ;)

What do you intend to use the lens for?

Studio, Weddings and every day photos.
I think the Macro would be useful for work but the fast aperture for the every day use is great.
Last time I owned a tele was a 105mm on a Nikon FA 10 years ago. I know I will be getting more gear in the future, I'm just not sure what I need to begin with.

I forgot to mention, I'm a student in photography and I'm starting to work. Last time I shot weddings was with my dad 15 years ago and we still used film. I am also going to work with a studio. So far I used my Mamiya there and my friend's 5dii.

Ring shots perhaps aside, you don't need a macro lens at all; not that the 100/2.8 isn't a fine lens, and, to a degree multipurpose. It is however slow to focus, and a stop slower than, for example, the non-macro 100/2.

I urge you to revisit the idea of a zoom. Modern zooms do not suffer from the image quality compromises to the extent of the lenses that you may be more used to, and zooms offer huge versatility, and are generally fine for all but the most painstaking work or where faster than f/2.8 is required.

In particular, I'd suggest that you consider either the 24-70/2.8L or possibly the 70-200/2.8L, probably the former, although for portraiture I belong to the "longer is better" school.

If prime it must be, consider the 135L, perhaps partially filling the gap with a 50/1.8.

For the stuff you mention, I'd get the 85 1.4.
