Hello this is my first post so hi!!
In afew weeks I am being made redundant and Im going to get a new camera....i was going to get a 7d (i need my money to last as long as possible if i can't find work so its a cost thong) however my local canon approved. shop have pre loved 5d mark. ii for less them the 7d without lenses at £1200 with 3months warrenty . but i don't know if that's a stupid thing to do? or if i were to get a 5d mark ii should I buy new?. Im really sorry if that's a stupid question! I just thought you would be the best people to ask and I hope you don't mind. Many thanks xx

Really you have answered your own question" I need my money to last as long as possible", if I were in your shoes I would not buy anything until I found more work.

Depends what you are shooting. Both are great cameras.

I wouldn't want to shoot fast moving sports with a 5d, but I would rather shoot landscapes or weddings with one.....

I have both the 7D and 5DII and a good 90% of my shots are with the 5DII - I just prefer it, but still need the 7D for some stuff. So I would go with one of those given the choice (although lens options need to be considered).

However, I agree with Chris, if you need your money to last, why not wait?

Hi Pickle - sorry to hear that you are being downsized - that's lousy. I've had my 5D bodies since 2006 and they are wonderful devices. I imagine well maintained used ones will still perform well.

Is your intent to make money with your camera? Do you have a business plan in mind for income that involves photography? I don't know what the current conversion rate is for pounds, but it still looks like a significan amount of money. As troutfisher pointed out, perhaps now is not the best time to be spending much needed money on luxury items.

In the meantime, good luck finding new employment.

I have no idea why on earth you believe its ok to tell me to get a job (even when you have zero clue as to what i do) before i invest in an object i have considered buying thoughly . for a long time. you have angered and upset me sir. how very rude you are.

Pickle - I don't believe that anybody means offense here - we tend to be sympathetic to folks and their employment situations. It was just an opinion that people voiced from their concern in response to the facts you presented in your first post.

Pickle - The points you made in your OP were: you will soon be unemployed, you're getting a new camera and you need to make your money last longer. You didn't add in that you do photography part-time, and so you would now like to aim to go full-time professional with it, so no-one understood that you do have experience and were trying to help you from making a mistake. ie. I will get a nice, expensive camera and make some easy money with it.

I wish you the best in your new endeavour and hope it works out for you.

My personal opinion - with being low on cash, a good second-hand camera would probably be best. I've seen on forums, a lot of people managing to upgrade because of a deal on a second-hand camera.

good grief. where did i once ask for an opinion on my work situation ? there are 101 things from my post you could choose to pass judgement on and give "your opinion " however the fact remains. That I asked a question about a camera. NOT whether or not do you think i should be getting one at all. or are you saying that no matter what one posts its a free for all to give your opinionf i didn't have the required response s on anything and not answer the question....i highly doubt it. If i were to read a question posted by another i wouldn't reply to it. its that simple. i wouldn't stick my 2p in with any old whoo ha that i know nothing about its rediclouse.

Jeez! I can't imagine why such a friendly, easy-going person with such great communications and interpersonal skills would be let go. I am sure your soon-to-be former employer has made a HUGE mistake. Good luck with your photographic adventure.
