Good afternoon,

My wife's and my small business does a mix of video and photography. Generally, I do the still photos and my wife does the video and editing work - with plenty of crossover, of course. We're relatively new, and have been looking for insurance without much luck (we've made it a year without needing it, knock wood). Even a business insurance rep in our network is coming up pretty short. As soon as one mentions "video," one gets lumped in with the major networks that have millions of dollars in gear and hundreds of staff... and, well, we're not up to that level quite yet, as we have just two people and only about $30k in gear (about half of which is in the editing suite & software).

I'm looking at PPA, and wondered if there are any here who do a significant amount of video work, are members of PPA, and use their insurance resources (PhotoCare, general liability). It seems that the wording in the Coverage Summary document on Lockton Affinity's site (http://ppa.locktonaffinity.com/photocare.htm (external link)) does not specifically exclude video; in fact, it explicitly includes audio gear, which I think implies that video recording gear is included as well. Especially as the line becomes increasingly blurred between still and video, it seems that they would have some provisions for videographers.

Any thoughts? I did a cursory review of the PPA site, but didn't find anything specific. I'm going to go over the PPA site a little more thoroughly this evening and discuss it with my wife, and give them a call tomorrow for clarification.

Don't assert a distinction between still and video in the insurance context. With what you're doing, there is no insurance distinction, and as you noted, you're just confusing them because their concept of "video" involves massive production operations. You are just like a still photographer, except that your equipment list will be a bit different.
