. It seems that some copies have unaccepatable levels of flare, and that Canon will repair them for free.

As far as I know, they simply replaced the defective models. Below is the link to Canon USA's notice. Basically, if the Date code on your lens is below UT1000, it is affected by the recall. Anything UT1000 and above is not subject to the problem. Tom
