Ha! Well I won't clog up this thread with images I've posted before, a search will probably uncover the pictures I've posted...

I just hate it when you think you took a good shot, then someone else posts from the same same event with a shot then makes yours looks like it was taken frm a P&S!

Still, it's fun learning..

I suppose that's what makes us keep going out and shooting.

Good bit of panning at the grass track event.

I've just got back from shooting The Fix, again, while rehearsing and after looking at the results all this talk of lights makes me think may need to get something to replace the speedlites. This thread is not good for the bank balance.

I'm mulling over the school photography - not having strobes makes it a bit more to think about. And the finished product - I have no idea (not having seen any school photos for years!)

Financially it could be a good move, friend of mine has told me how much they get charged so if you can to either be the official photographer or in with some of the parents I think there is plenty of scope.

I picked up a set of these recently that I've had a lot of fun using. Lovely and portable, and highly recommended. Not that I'm an expert though, but perhaps that's part of their charm. Turn on and go.

I will have to look into that and the ones Matt is looking at. For me I will most likely go down the route of a 580 and battery pack first and then look at proper lights.

As annoying as that is, it is a good way to learn. Going on a shoot with Ian, Rich or Mark can do that. It is also good to see how different people look at the same subject. A good example is this thread from one of our London threads

Andy at knole said it was about time we had another London meet which looking at that thread looks like a good idea. Possible walk around London then Hyde Park for the Christmas fair??

Found the answer to that....discovered his camera is allergic to my lens and disables it:D:D:D...Only problem is I doubt he will let it anywhere near it again:(

That was a good one, I should have taken a photo of the look on face at that point.

Well the Christmas lights are up now, so maybe a good idea ?

Was working central london the other night and they look good but a bit repetitive.

Mike some lovely shots.

That first one could have benefitted from off camera flash/strobes.

The black and white one is my favourite.

The London thread Adrian posted a link to is great, I'm on the ipad so can't view exif data.. These pics make me want a walk around lens more ad more! The bank account puts me right back in my place though :(

I look forward to the next meeting where I can hopefully make it! Would probably hold off from a London meet and wait until a local one.

I wouldnt use F22 for bird-in-flight shots its far too small.

Most bird photographers would have their aperture set to around F5.6 or F7.1. Use whatever ISO you need to keep the speed up.

If you are after bird in flight shots then obviously AI servo is the setting to have it on - the tracking sensitivity would depend on whether its clear background or slightly cluttered ie lots of trees. Clear background should be on a faster tracking sensitivity and cluttered should be set slower to enable you to follow and track the bird.

Hope that is of interest.

Linda

Thanks Linda.

I would never normally use such a small aperture for birding either. I just saw the buzzard making his final escape and raised the camera for a final shot of the day. I really didn't think about it to be honest.
I have however been using too large an apeture compared to what you suggest. I normally go for f3.2-f4 and as low ISO setting as I can get away with (200-400) which may explain why I get such a high wastage due to blurry results. Next time I go out I'll try your suggested apeture settings and up the ISO and see how it goes so thanks for that :D.

As far as a London walkabout goes....I'm up for that. Having spent years working in and around the city/west end, I'd love the chance to shoot some of it.

It took 2 days to get permission for access to the roof where this was taken and another few hours of emails and phone calls to get the camera allowed up there. Taken with my old 40D and a Sigma 28-200 from the roof of a government building that shall remain nameless....
