I'm mulling over the school photography - not having strobes makes it a bit more to think about. And the finished product - I have no idea (not having seen any school photos for years!)
Financially it could be a good move, friend of mine has told me how much they get charged so if you can to either be the official photographer or in with some of the parents I think there is plenty of scope.

I picked up a set of these recently that I've had a lot of fun using. Lovely and portable, and highly recommended. Not that I'm an expert though, but perhaps that's part of their charm. Turn on and go.

I will have to look into that and the ones Matt is looking at. For me I will most likely go down the route of a 580 and battery pack first and then look at proper lights.

I just hate it when you think you took a good shot, then someone else posts from the same same event with a shot then makes yours looks like it was taken frm a P&S!
Still, it's fun learning..
As annoying as that is, it is a good way to learn. Going on a shoot with Ian, Rich or Mark can do that. It is also good to see how different people look at the same subject. A good example is this thread from one of our London threads
Andy at knole said it was about time we had another London meet which looking at that thread looks like a good idea. Possible walk around London then Hyde Park for the Christmas fair??

...except when Mark posts because most people will never get near that good

Found the answer to that....discovered his camera is allergic to my lens and disables it

...Only problem is I doubt he will let it anywhere near it again
