Alohå :)

Had our heads buried in code recently, just finished reddening the other halves photography website. She's not on the forum (yet), but runs a photographic studio in St.Albans, Hertfordshire. Will do my best to get her registered and take part in the thread :)

If anyone fancies taking a look (and letting me know if anything doesn't work :D) the link is http://www.hcphotography.co.uk (external link)

Hi Richard - love the site but am finding the font on "About Hannah" for example, really difficult to read. I don't know if it's because it's white on black, but it looks fuzzy (even with my glasses on  ). Mr G thought the same. Can anyone else see that too? Hannah is obviously very talented. :D

I was going to comment on the same thing - the font for some reason looks too cramped and its quite hard to follow with your eye. I think its because the narrow charcters back right up against the previous letter. Racking my brain I think the technical term is called Kerning ( Mark will be able to help correct me with this) and there is little to no kerning on some letters in that font.

The actual content is really great though. Great website all round.

@ Andy ~ +1 on the Nuthatch, delightfull bird (missing the ones that came to the garden up until a few weeks back, last one is cracker and did need that PP 'boost'.

@ Richard ~ Hannah is one talented lady, as for the website comes across very slick and hits the mark but the whit on black font I also found hard to read clearly & easily :( it looks lacking in contrast as almost grey rather than white??? As for the trip & car shoot  best of luck ;)

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

I'm now off to pack for a whistle-stop trip to Spain, photographing a new car launch for a popular magazine. :D

You really need to get Hannah to join up Richard. We could all learn something from someone with her talant.

Not seeing a problem with the script on my laptop that Penel and Kaben mentioned. Seems fine here. Maybe I'm not the person to ask given that I can't even PP a simple bird shot properly.

Agree - that last NutHatch shot is really good (as mentioned - a touch more contrast / black would go down a treat)

Richard: Had a quick look at Hannah's site and apart from the baby photo's (sorry, staged baby shots really creep me out for some reason) it looks terrific and can I say, hand on heart - what a phenomenal talent! I don't 'do' people / portrait shots but have seen a lot and these are way up there.

Hi all,
Wow, thank you so much for your kind words and feedback on the site. I didn't realise Rich had even put it on here so that was a welcome surprise. He has now signed me up so I get to see where he wastes hours of time while I'm busy shooting! ;-)a
Thank you for the feedback on the text being hard to read, I will fix that right away.
Glad you approve of my stuff. David, I hear you on the baby thing but it pays my mortgage! I am not a fan of that kind of thing really but I draw the line at the hats, no cheesy props for me!
If I had my way I would be photographing actors, models, musicians, and boudoir all day long but I guess that shows in my work! ;-)a
Anyway, thank you all. I look forward to chatting some more with you if I get the hang of this!

Richard looks great to me, the only thing (not a critique) are that some images where they are resized to fit a screen resolution look like they have lost their crispness from the original image uploaded possibly being too small. I`m looking at this on a 2560px x 1440px screen, so this is probably why. Its not a big deal, but thought I would mention as its fairly noticeable next to a sharp looking image. Got to say, your other halfs work is superb, very very talented!!! I have always enjoyed and been impressed with your own work, so it looks like you both make an outstanding photographic team. Have a great trip!!!

good stuff Rich, really nice and smooth site.. go on what car are you photographing this time? ;)

Unfortunately i'm sworn to secrecy (for now) but it's a hot hatch for CAR Magazine. Should be fun, considering I asked about luggage restrictions and they said don't worry, it's a private jet

Thanks mate, appreciate the feedback. I've always encountered problems when it comes to this, as it's finding a happy medium in terms of file size/load time and image quality. I worked it out in terms of average monitor size (I use a 27" iMac) and the files are too small for that but figured most would be viewing it smaller. The website is quite image heavy, and uploading larger scale images meant longer load times (or easier theft). Building a site for myself at the moment, and i'm still battling with this issue

I Know exactly where you are coming from Richard. It is frustrating especially with fluid and elastic sites. It wont be long before 4k resolutions screens are out which throws a spanner in the works!!! Hannahs site is very quick for me.

afternoon all, cheers for all the kind words chaps about the cover and the article, im really looking forward to actually seeing it in print, next month im in Photo Professional this time with my wedding photos which is a nice change.

Penel the 300f4 is a great lens, the only downside really is the old noisy IS, why dont you hire one for weekend, you might hate it, the other lens that always comes up while talking about the 300 is the 400 f5.6, no IS but a really sharp lens and its 400mm, you lose a stop of light but it will take a 1.4tc well, or borrow Lees 100-400 and have a play, I hated mine but that doesn't mean its not a great lens, I just couldn't get on with the trumpet push pull thing.

Thanks Mark, I think I'll hire a 400mm 5.6 maybe when we go to Norfolk for the week, or I may do a real quick trip to Norfolk to see some boxing hares in the next couple of weeks, all depends on how things are here with the dogs, Barley's really poorly so can't go anywhere right now.

I've got my copy. 8 pages of owls !
Do we get an autographed copy at the bird of prey day ?

Penel , 300 f4, is a nice lens
This (external link) was with the 300 f4 last year at BWC also it had the x1.4 teleconverter fitted.
This (external link)as well.
I bought mine sencond hand for £680 in june 2011 and sold it in july 2011 for £640 (both on ebay) so I lost a little.

thanks Andy, still can't make up my mind!

Hi Hannah. welcome :D yay another girl. There are a few of us here but we're far outnumbered by the boys. They talk about Lego and cars a lot  I mostly photograph animals, sometimes people with their animals - but it's easier without the people ;)

If you get the 300, you get IS then add the x1.4 and you get a 428mm @ f5.6 with IS.
if you get the 400mm you dont get the IS and you dont have the option of using 300mm.

I know :p I've thought of all those things already ;) on a 5D3 though the 300mm will be "less" than it is on a 7D as well.... hmmmm. Sometimes I wish the decision was just made for me.

ah but you can crop more on a 5d3 than a 7D, at the bird thing you can put your card in and shoot away with it for a bit if you like, are you actually coming on that day I cant remember?

Welcome along Hannah.. Your new site looks very impressive & I love the layout of your studio, it looks like a very workable and versatile space! :D

I totally agree with the newborn comments, if the parents request it or have the accessories I will take some pictures with them but I tend to go with the more natural shots or baby posed on a stretched throw! :)
