I like #2 ... I feel like the first one is a bit too dark in the grass area.

#2.

One feels a bit too heavy-handed, and Three is a bit flat. IMO.

I'm a sucker for grayscale, so I vote for the last one. But I'd increase the exposure a bit, and maybe turn down the contrast. I think this would work well as a low-contrast grayscale image. If you're using adobe camera raw, I'd move the blacks slider to the left one or two notches.

Both in number 1 and 3 the blacks have been so crushed that you have lost the detail in the clouds and in the boats interior cabin, as well as detail in the shadowed grass. The overall effects of both are nice, but loosing detail to editing is something I never really like. I think people are so used to looking at images online where the detail of the shot is lost that they just accept it. This is a great example of how you can kill detail through editing. Printed at a viewable size, that detail may come back...

So for that reason, I am solidly with 2. I am sure there is a way you could split the difference and still get the uber dramatic look while keeping you shadow detail in tact.

That's what made my decision.

#2 only because the grass is visible.

And it's because if the light grass, and the relative hot-spot, that I chose 1. I think the photo 'feels right' in darker tones.

Blimmy - Go away for a few days and get no end of great feedback - cheers Guys!

Im heading towards 2, but I agree 1000% regarding the grass going to dark and as such looking kinda like a big black mess.

More tweaking todo to be sure!

Hi All,

I finally settled on this one - I do feel the image is flawed quite a bit, i didnt expose the shot correctly when I took it and recovering detail from the grass has been hard. In the end technicaly its very flawed. But overall I think its an okay image.

cheers all for your advice!

Looks great Matt. I'd still crop the right (and bottom) a tiny bit. My eyes keep on being drawn to the "hill" on the right hand side.
