You mean you don't even have a home contents policy? You realize nothing is covered in event of fire, flood, etc. right?

yeah you still need to have contents insurance to cover the blongings in your home.
There is also a difference in the insurance you'll need depending if you make money using your gear.
Is it strictly personal use or do you use your gear for business purposes? (any money made from photos)

Im an insurance adjuster for property by the way so ask away

Peace Hills - Entrepreneur Plus - about $110 a year. gives you amazing coverage - nothing comes close for the money.

And I will second the comment about not having rental insurance, just because you don't own the property doesn't mean it can't be robbed, flooded, burnt down, or otherwise destroyed. contents insurance is a must.

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

I am also in Canada, but we do own a house, and as far as I understand have a decent home insurance (stuff stolen outside of the house should be covered).

What I don't understand is what can be covered, and what not. For example, most of my gear was bought second hand, from private sellers. Can it qualify for insurance in case it is stolen? If it does, what kind of proof would I need that I had this gear?

yes it can be covered. It doesnt make a difference if its new or used.
If you have replacement cost on your policy (which almost all do) you would receive the current equivelent for replacement.

You need to show proof of ownership. This can be done by having a photo of the item, the boxes, original receipts (for items purchased new)
Basincally anything that can show you had that piece of contents

Is it not possible to get the Entrepreneur insurance from them if you don't have homeowner's insurance as well, or does it just cost more?

What I don't understand is what can be covered, and what not.

When I lived in Quebec all I had to do was to give them a list of what I had, the value to replace and they put a rider on my content insurance policy for the condo that I was renting at the time. I also had a primary residence in Alberta (I commuted ) and there they felt that I had too much gear to cover it under a home owners policy. I was forced to taking a special hobbyist kind of policy that was a little more expensive but did cover everything at replacement value. When I started to run this as a business everything changed. They would no longer cover my gear under the home policy and I was required to move the gear that I did use for business purposes under the insurance umbrella for that.

I would contact an insurance broker which is different from an agent. A broker will hunt out the best rates and policies for what you are wanting and they are not tied to anyone company. When I did this when I moved back to Alberta permanently and the broker came back with a few different options. I was surprised at how the rates varied between companies for essentially the same coverage. Just because you have home owners insurance doesn't necessarily mean that all your gear is going to be covered under the content replacement of that. I learned this and was glad I did though I have never had to claim on it. I have read about some bad experiences that people have had when they went to claim on expensive hobby equipment and the insurance company deemed that they had more equipment than a hobby required and their claim was denied. No matter what you do, check it out fully and get the same question answered by a couple of different offices. I found out that the rules changed alot between provinces in Canada.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Theres some good information in that last post.
Quebec is completely different than all other provinces (go figure eh)
the most important things to remember when purchasing insurance is this:
1. be sure its an "All Risk" policy
2. review exclusions for camera related equipment (ive never seen one and I adjuster claims for about 15 different companies here in Ontario and have in BC and Alberta as well)
3. Dont lie about not using your gear to make money, they will find out and thats when denials happen
4. If you do use it for business, its a totally different game with different insurance ad rules
