Does anyone know how to do it? I did a google search but didn't come up with much.

I need a filter spacer and what better way to get one than to take apart a UV filter that I'm not using :D

This site shows it can be done, but doesn't say how.

Not saying you can't or shouldn't, but how about getting hold of a stepping ring for a few $$?

Never knew what they were called! I'll check them out :)

I kept searching for "52mm to 52mm step ring" and "52mm spacer" and not finding anything, but by changing it to "stepper" I found some!

Seems your problem is resolved, but dismantling a UV filter is reasonably easy.
All you need is an optical wrench... then adjust it to suit the notches on the glass retaining ring and unscrew the retainer. The trick is having the optical wrench... I use this one. (external link) You would be well advised NOT to try this without a proper wrench!

B+W and some other high end models have the retainer ring on the inside.
Some inexpensive filters (Quantaray among them) use a circular spring-clip... these are easy to remove with a jeweler's screwdriver.

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

And on some filters the filter glass can not be dismatelt because the filter is not hold be retainer ring or spring clip, but bent metal :-/
I dissmanteled some filters to get the glass for my infrared EOS Rebel XT with interchangable filters.

Well I managed to remove it using two screws, using the technique of the spanner wrench. Thanks noisejammer! :)

Now I can put that $10 I was gonna spend on the spacer toward the lens fund. May not sound like a lot but $10 here and $10 there adds up real fast!

I accomplished this by dropping my 645 camera to the ground from about 4 feet. It takes some effort as you have to align it precisely so it falls directly on the corner of the filter. If done correctly, the filter will shatter and you can then just pick out the pieces. Having the camera body hit first will lead to failure of this effort with other unintended results.

I have a ND and a IR filter, but they were hitting the front element on my lens. I was just letting them go on 180 degrees. But now I can fully seat them and not worry about them falling off.

What do you have in mind? :D
