50mm 1.4 Hood & Lens Cap Question

Ok, got a 50mm 1.4 and bought a hood for it as well as a clear filter to protect the lens. The filter came with a cap.

So here's the problem. With the hood in place I can't get my fingers in there to remove the cap. So, everytime I want to remove the cap I have to remove the hood.

Is there some kind of cap available with a tab or something that I can use?

Silly problem, yes I know, but thought I'd ask.

The original canon lens cap is not too bad. It helps to tip the lens, so the cap falls out when you squeeze the tabs.

Have you bought a 'thin' filter with no front thread on it? If that is the case, I can see that being a pain. However, it could probably be left off during a session (as you have the filter to protect the lens, along with the hood).

Yeah, I have the thin one with no threads. But, even if I didn't have the filter on and was using the Canon cap with the lens with the hood, I still couldn't get my fingers in there.

Would a larger lens cap fit on (and stay on) the hood itself? Take it to a camera store and test a few out.

The simple solution is to ignore the filter unless you are in a really harsh environment and just use the Canon lens cap.

I've never used filters on any of my lenses for 40+ years and the lenses that I purchaed in the 1960's and still own all have pristine glass in them. The outer surfaces have paint worn off from the extensive use they've seen, but the glass has never suffered. I do use lens hoods always. Lens hoods provide all the protection I have ever felt that I needed, and the quality of my old lenses is proof of that.

That's an interesting idea, putting it on the hood itself, didn't even think of that. Though without any kind of ridges on the hood, I don't know if would stay on.

I had been reading the filter/no filter debate, and for now I'm going with double protection, but as I mentioned before, even without the filter you still can't get your fingers in there to release the cap. It's just a tight fit.

Many people have the "Nifty Fifty" what are they doing about the cap thing?

Perhaps I'm beeing too careful?

You can purchase a Tamron squeeze type lens cap at your local camera shop.

I have the same problem with my 70-200mm and I have small fingers!

Right now I just deal with the extra time it takes to take off/put on the hood and put on/pull off the lens cap. I'ts not that bad in terms of time consumption... just kind of redundant and annoying.

But I just leave the cap off when I'm out on a shoot, if you have a UV filter on there you don't have to worry about it, just take off the cap when you go out and put it back on when you get back. That way you only have to deal with the problem twice ;)

But if you can find a 58mm Tamron lens cap I'm sure that would help. The cap for my 28-75mm is great, the hood doesn't even get in the way. :)

i think someone like optech or pelican makes hood covers that are neoprene and fit over the hood so you don't have to use the lens cap at all. kinda looks like on of those old beer can insulation things.

what about those lens cap tring things?

You know where one end has a sticky part that goes on the cap and the other end normally ties on to the camera? Why not get one of those and just cut off a bit of the string and just pull on it to remove the cap?

You could always DIY one too. A little string, some tape.. heh.

Here's what you're looking for - - a center pinch lens cap. Saw one earlier today at our local store.

Yep, the center pinch caps work great when using a hood.
