I was using my wife's PowerShot S30 and didn't really care about the quality. Just wanted to get the point across.

HOWEVER. . .that really does suck. I should be a little embarrassed. Anyway, that's how I store the thing.

John

I store mine the same way as John Collins, it only takes a second to remove the lens cap and reverse the bayonet hood...

In a perverse way it makes me feel a little better to know that others are experiencing the same problem. At least I know that my fat fingers and I are not alone.

JohnCollins - thanks for the reply. I actually store it just the same way as you do. My question was more for when it was in use. I realize I'm probably just being too protective. With 28-105 I had been putting the cap back on whenever I wasn't shooting, so with the 50 I found this wasn't working well with the hood on. Last night I shot a Christmas party and just left the cap in the case the whole night and set my camera down many times throught the night. Normally I would put the cap on whenever I set it down. Last night I didn't, and we both survived, so maybe I'll justy stop babying the poor thing.

Um, yeah, you're being a little too protective -- bordering on OC disorder .

I thought you were just worried about putting it back in the camera bag. I think you said you're leaving the filter on for protection anyway. While the lens is on the camera with the filter on and the lens hood on, too, if you're worrying about getting the lens cap in there between shots. . .well, folks have gone into therapy for less. (just kidding).

Try a gradual, weaning approach. Put the camera down without the lens cap for five minutes. Stand at least ten feet away. Next time try ten minutes.

Seriously, though, I was at a Christmas lights display tonight and I had my 17-85 IS on with the lens hood only (the threads here weaned me off my filter for protection), and I pranged the front of the lens into a piece of doorway handle and nearly had a heart attack. But the hood protected it. Whew. I know what it's like to worry about this stuff. I'm worrying about how to launder money to get my next toy past my wife, not replace one I already have.

Good luck!

I had been reading the filter/no filter debate, and for now I'm going with double protection, but as I mentioned before, even without the filter you still can't get your fingers in there to release the cap. It's just a tight fit.

I'm with Skip. I do not use filters unless I need to filter light. The hood itself is good protection.

The Canon cap is easy enough to remove with a single finger on the release tab on one side. I have very large fingers and I can do it on the 50 with the hood in place.

But I do wish Canon would make their caps like Tamron or Noink caps, with the thumb tabs for releasing the thread lock in the middle of the cap.

In your case, though, I would just epoxy a loop of fabric on the front of the filter cap and use that to pull the cap off.

Hi - My Name is Ronn - and I'm a CAPOHOLIC . . . . . ok, I'm going cold turkey!

JohnCollins - You crack me up! Literally. I'm DJ-ing at a club right now, of course reading the forums while I do it, and busted out laughing at your reply. Luckily no one was around to see.

JohnCollins, very funny! I laughed in my office loud enough for my dog to get up with a question in his eyes :-)

Kind of like this:
