Depends on what the type of photography you do honestly. Depending on what you shoot you could possibly get a cheaper body and some nice glass instead.

If you can provide some info about what you shoot most often, possibly a budget (to also cover lenses), and whether this is for hobby or profit, we can give more objective answers whether this is the camera for you.

As to whether the 1D3 is a good camera, yes, it is a very capable camera, and in many cases, folks prefer it still to the newer 1D series, both due to budget and capabilities.

Any large prints? What sizes would you support?

I would say already that you will need at least $3500-4000 for a budget to cover glass, a flash, and a body.

The 1D3 will do what want very readily, the only question is whether you have to crop your images, and if so, this reduces your print size capabilities vs an APS-C crop body like the 50D or 7D that gives you more pixels on target and more cropping power.

A 1D3 with a 24-70 (either the Canon or Sigma HSM), a 70-200 (f2.8 is a necessity IMO, so again either the Canon MKI IS version, or the Sigma MKII version), and a 580 EXII flash will run up a tab near this $3-4K mark. This would give you a very good initial kit that you can really grow into.

Going to an APS-C instead of an APS-H, like a rebel T2i and up, or the 7D will shave off around $500-700 from this price tag.
