help picking a lens

hi guys

first of all hello to every one im new here

i am a carp fisherman and i recently bought a canon 1100d for taking my pictures as i wanted good quality photos.

how ever i am looking for a lens to allow me to use the av mode so i can have the background blurred and the standard lens just doesnt cut it so i am after advise on this if at all possible

sorry forgot to add budget not silly amounts the cheaper the better and im from the uk

Yep, get the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens. It's cheap and will accomplish your goal, the only thing to keep in mind is that it is a prime lens so the focal length is fixed so it cannot zoom.


Cameras: 7D2, S100
Lenses: 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, 18-135 STM, 24-70 f/4L IS USM, 50 f/1.4 USM,70-300L IS USM
Other Stuff: 430 EX II, Luma Labs Loop 3, CamRanger

the zoom is not too much of a problem i would prefer to have the zoom funcion though lol just to be akward

One caveat - if you're going to be taking lots of pictures of fish inside a (non-huge) boat, you may find the 50mm to be a little narrow, as it will come out to an 80mm shot on your camera. You mentioned a budget - 50mm is the best price for the performance, but if you want large aperture with a normal field of view, then you should look at the Sigma 30mm f/1.4, the Canon 28mm f/1.8, or the Canon 35mm f/2. Maybe now you can consider the Canon 40mm f/2.8, which is still pretty narrow, but faster than your kit lens and is being reviewed pretty well.
