During my trip through Japan. I had an accident. Someone run into me while I was changing lenses. The 24-105 felt from the stairs :( The guy that run in to me disappeared .... Not happy with the lost of this lens. I really mist the lens during the rest of my holiday.

Hope the insurance will cover a part of the damage.

Hmm sorry about that. But you think an UV filter would've protected this lens? It seems like it cracked in the middle of the body also. Sorry for your lost. At lease lots of people are getting 5d Mark III with that lens and selling them for good prices. Maybe you could replace it.

Nothing would have happened to the front element if you had the lens hood on? Hope insurance will cover that?

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Falling from a stairs, I doubt any filter or hood would have save the lens. Curse that clumsy rude man!

OEM lens hood saved mine from a direct full-frontal impact that would have ended like this.

The lens hood was on. But the lens fell over 50 concrete stares down.
Body felt in the sand. Not a hard impact. (and still works)

I never use a UV/clear/protection filter. I have my reasons for it. But better not make a discussion out this ;-)a

Just had contact with the insurance company. I have to sent the lens and camera to a Canon repair center. They will cover the damage (they say)

This is why we should all buy 10000000x super mega zooms with sensors the size of a pinhead, no lens changing then!

That really sucks. Hopefully your insurance comes through and they don't jack your rates or drop you..

This is the first time in 15 years that I have a claim for the insurance company. They where very helpful en understanding when I called. I sent everything next week to a repair center. When I get the bill I and the confirmation that the lens can't be repaired I can sent it to the insurance company. So I can order a new lens (like the 24-70 II)

To bad that this happened on the second day of my holiday :(
I had the 16-35II and the 70-200II with me. Mist the mm between 35 70 sometimes

Sorry to see that - I hope everything works out smoothly with the insurance company; sounds like it will. In the meantime, if you haven't sent it yet, take a couple pictures through the damaged lens and post them - who knows, you might get something interesting!

Insurance should take care of you! Sorry for the loss!

I must say, that lens help up damn well for a fall down 50 steps... All things considered. For all we know, they may only need to replace the front element, front assemblies and calibrate/check functions of the lens and be good to go.

The lens won't fit any more on the camera. All ready tried it.... The repair center in Tokyo said the 24-105 can't be fixed. Better to buy a new one. Inside of the lens is a lot of damage.

Now waiting what the repair center in the Netherlands will say about the lens. So I can sent this information to the insurance company.
After the incident and the comments of the repair center. I made up my mind and ordered the new 24-70 II.
