I am in process of getting a new lens! I currently have the 50mm 1.8, BUT I am eyeing the 35 2.0 and the newest to the Canon family, the 40 2.8. I've read that they were pretty close to each other.....help me please!! I'm torn! I need more opinions.

The focal lengths you're looking at are quite close to each other, but the 35 f2 would be closer to "normal". What about longer focal lengths?

That said, I'm loving what people are producing with the 40 f2.8.

What camera do you have now? The 40mm is showing a lot of promise.

The 40mm pancake on a Rebel makes a really compact and portable camera/lens combo for a DSLR, and the thing is cheap with a quiet autofocus.

i couldn't get an f2.8 prime, you can get an f2.8 zoom that would cover 40mm for a few bucks more...so i'd go for the 35 f2 it's a good little lens

Nobody asked the core questions:

What do you dislike about your current lens?
What are you hoping to achieve with a new lens?
What do you photograph?

Since you already have a 50mm, I would look for something wider than a 40 or 35mm. Perhaps a Canon 28 1.8 or a Sigma 30 1.4 would be a good choice.

I agree with DreHaze. If Im going for a prime, its going to be a faster lens than a f/2.8. You can get 2.8 from 17-5x zooms that have excellent IQ.

Since you are a newbie, I would highlight what smcintosh wrote. It's really not possible to give you good advice unless you tell us what you want to be able to do with your new lens that you can't do with your old one. There are lots and lots of choices, and if you don't say what YOU need a new lens for, folks will guess based on what they shoot, which may be completely different.

The 40 and your current 50 are quite close in focal length and speed, so I doubt that the 4 would let you do much that is different.

If you know that you want to go wider but don't yet have a lot of experience, you might do well to get an inexpensive zoom, e.g., the kit 18-55 IS (very cheap but not fast) or the Tamron 17-50 non-VC (not as cheap but a faster fixed f/2.8). That would allow you to experiment with a fairly wide range of focal lengths and learn which lengths are most useful for what YOU want to shoot. There are folks here who say you will learn more shooting with primes, but as someone who did learn with primes and shot only primes for years, I don't agree. An inexpensive zoom would give you the opportunity to try out a lot of different types of shooting. However, if you want things other than going wider, this might be bad advice.
