My take on it is that machine gun mode does the wearing out faster. Precision parts do warm up and that would accelerate wear?

While machine gunning sounds like a way to get the shot- there are others out there that purport that the way to get that single shot is to - practice- and take it as a single shot. true- if we had a camera that took hundreds of shots per second- machine gunning would make sense. At 8 FPS- the difference in between shots is - 1/8th of a second. With practice- you should be able to get the better shot more accurately by practicing your timing- or so the theory goes.

It's even more of a difference at say- 3 to 6 fps... the lower the FPS, the better your chances of getting a single shot to work - over machine gunning..

The other side of the coin- is the looks from the others that can't do 8 FPS - when they hear your camera rattling off 8 FPS! Pretty sure nearly every 7D owner is guilty of this one! Sometimes, one does things- because they can!

Guilty of that exact thing.

Just sounded cool when I had the 7D! Part of the features of the camera, so you might as well use it -- and if it attracts attention, at least you'll get some funnily candid shots.

I just looked at a 50D that when I tested it had 147,890 shutters. Remember that shutter is only rated for 100,000.

Keep shooting and quit worrying. I average about 25k a year myself and have no worries of failure. When it does just go in for an oil change and get her replaced ;)

create a fund for your new camera, put in 10-20 bux a month into a piggy bank, and when your camera dies, use that to buy a new one. It should be enough to buy a cheaper replacement or new replacement depending on how long your gear lasts (which should be very long).

I dont even think about the failure on my camera, shoot away.

I had coffee with my friend and her friends, and due to the wind I was taking portraits of her in short well-timed bursts, They heard my 7D go off and went "Holy crap how fast does it shoot" so I ended up burning off a good 20 shots holding down the trigger to demonstrate the 8FPS thing.. xD

But yeah for me, i use the 8fps because tiny birds.. 8fps helps get me priceless things like this:

Sometimes they're just moving so fast and situations are changing so quickly that a burst is just the best, most reliable way to nail the moment

then theres nailing things like this

Keep in mind im above 1:1 ratio in that shot (I'm pretty sure at least) as im using a 1.4x tcon, That took a lot of work to 1. find the little guy (He's SMALL) 2. coax him into a position i can get a picture of him, 3. get him in focus, and 4. get the flash set just right.. oh and he moves, and the plant was moving..and of course any minute movement from me is going to cause a problem too... So yeah, Bursts are a good thing there...
