Another vote for the f2 Zeiss if you can live with the MF. Live view certainly makes this more feasible.

If corner to corner sharpness is the only measure then you're not going to be satisfied with it, certainly. It does have its own appeal though and gives shots a vacant, inquisitive feel. I've got the 50/2....it produces the oil paintings whilst the 50/1.4 does the water colours. 1Dx2 (2), 5DSR, 1Ds3, 1D4, 5D2(590nm), 5D2(720nm) EF600 EF400 EF300-II EF300 EF200 EF200-II EF180L EF135L EF100 EF85-II EF50L TS-E17/4 TS-E24L-II TS-E45 TS-E90 MP-E65 EF70-200-II EF24-70/2.8-II EF16-35/4 EF8-15/4 EF11-24/4 Zeiss 15/2.8 21/2.8 25/2 28/2 35/1.4 35/2 50/2 85/1.4 100/2 135/2 T/C's L-SC & a WIFE!

I only need ONE 50mm lens... I already have a 35mm...after getting a 50mm I plan to get a wide angle lens what's your thought on this? The 50/1.4's shortcomings are mitigated somewhat if you're using a crop sensored body but, as earlier, if you're a sharpness fan then the 50/2 is what you want. 1Dx2 (2), 5DSR, 1Ds3, 1D4, 5D2(590nm), 5D2(720nm) EF600 EF400 EF300-II EF300 EF200 EF200-II EF180L EF135L EF100 EF85-II EF50L TS-E17/4 TS-E24L-II TS-E45 TS-E90 MP-E65 EF70-200-II EF24-70/2.8-II EF16-35/4 EF8-15/4 EF11-24/4 Zeiss 15/2.8 21/2.8 25/2 28/2 35/1.4 35/2 50/2 85/1.4 100/2 135/2 T/C's L-SC & a WIFE!

I'm not someone who has a good appreciation of wide lenses so my opinion wouldn't count for much. I can say that the my TS-E24/II is better than the EF24/II much that's about it, sorry. Bob If I get a 50/1.4, then I probably would not get a 50/2...and vice versa...unless I won a lottery. So I guess I have to find out which lens I'd be satisfied with for years to come...if I could only have one of these two lenses.

ypras Member 149 posts Joined Nov 2010 Location: Ioannina, Greece More info | I used to have the 50 planar. It was soft wide open but usable. Also very dificult for manual focus wide open. The thing that bothered me more was its bokeh wide open, very nervous. Stopped down it is one of the sharpest lenses i have seen. There is no comparison to the sigma 50 in wide open sharpness and bokeh. The sigma (i own it) is much much better. 5D Mark II - Canon 50 1.8 II
