Another vote for the f2 Zeiss if you can live with the MF. Live view certainly makes this more feasible.

Zeiss 50 1.4 is crap.....

If corner to corner sharpness is the only measure then you're not going to be satisfied with it, certainly. It does have its own appeal though and gives shots a vacant, inquisitive feel. I've got the 50/2....it produces the oil paintings whilst the 50/1.4 does the water colours.

$400 is a damn good price whatever.

What would you buy first? Zeiss 50mm 1.4 or Zeiss Macro 50mm 2?

The 50/2 without a doubt.....but it is twice the price.

I should probably save up more and wait to buy the 50/2 then...
I only need ONE 50mm lens...
I already have a 35mm...after getting a 50mm I plan to get a wide angle lens
what's your thought on this?

The 50/1.4's shortcomings are mitigated somewhat if you're using a crop sensored body but, as earlier, if you're a sharpness fan then the 50/2 is what you want.
I'm not someone who has a good appreciation of wide lenses so my opinion wouldn't count for much. I can say that the my TS-E24/II is better than the EF24/II much that's about it, sorry.

The Zeiss 50/1.4 is very soft with a dreamy quality wide open that can be useful. By 5.6 it is extremely sharp. It is typical Zeiss in colors and pop. Many people even prefer it to the Zeiss 50/2. I like mine a lot.

By the way, I paid $475. for mine which was a 9/10 and I think I got very good value. It is a zf.1.

If I get a 50/1.4, then I probably would not get a 50/2...and vice versa...unless I won a lottery. So I guess I have to find out which lens I'd be satisfied with for years to come...if I could only have one of these two lenses.
Still debating ... lol :o :o :o

That's a steal!
I'd buy it in a heartbeat too if it's that price!

I can see how that can be useful.
This even makes it a tougher decision!

I used to have the 50 planar. It was soft wide open but usable. Also very dificult for manual focus wide open. The thing that bothered me more was its bokeh wide open, very nervous. Stopped down it is one of the sharpest lenses i have seen. There is no comparison to the sigma 50 in wide open sharpness and bokeh. The sigma (i own it) is much much better.
