Which case for general kids stuff? I was using case 4 with 70-200mm f2.8 IS II and had some OOF when shooting my son coming towards me on his little bike.

Also had 4 surrounding points enabled.

Didn't. I was just going by defaults of Case 4.

bannedPermanent ban

Be carefull to allow AI Servo to fully lock on and track subject - it takes a second or so.
Otherwise Single is faster and better.
Dont GOOF with OOF.

Single mode won't work with even small kid coming at me. I shoot sports so used to AI servo mode. maybe I will try with my 300mm f2.8.

fart around with the settings. There's only so many combinations until you find the right one.

I would hope that is not even close to necessary. Using AI SERVO, I can get consecutive perfectly focused shots of my dog running straight at me with a 60D and an 18-135. I have it set up for such activities by using Manual mode, f/8 or so, 1/500 or faster, and auto ISO. When the dog gets really close, the DOF get shallow enough to throw the last one or two OOF. I have also stood by the side of the highway and gotten similar results with cars coming at me at 60 mph. Surely the equipment you are using (5D3 + 70-200 II)is capable of getting the shots you are after.

f8 vs f2.8 is a big difference particularly at 200mm.;)

Point taken. I will try my 85 1.8 and get back on in a minute.

Edit: I concede. I got a series of 11 shots. EXIF, 1/8000 f/1.8, ISO Auto, stayed near 200. EOS 60D wth 85mm f/1.8.
Last two, completely OOF, I expected that. I kept AF point between her eyes. Out of the other 9 shots, 8 of them were focused on her ears or shoulders. Only one, curiously in the middle of the series, was dead on her eyes. And that was my fat old terrier at a dead run. I know the shepherd would be worse. Please excuse my uniformed comments.

Edit: Attached the one good one. Focus one eyes. Nose and tips of ears OOF.

That is pretty good shot. Shooting AI servo with subject coming at you is hard. I remember when Rob G did his tests with new 1dmk3.
