Hello! I have a question concerning the Zeiss Contax 28 mm 2.8. I have read many good things about this lens. Does someone know how it compares with the Canon 24 mm 2,8 ?

I am considering to buy the Zeiss (I already own the Canon), but I am not sure the difference would be particularly noticeable and online it seemed to me that views are mixed. I read of people who stopped using contax lenses (in particular the 25 mm) when they switched to the canon 24 mm 2.8. I am talking in terms of image quality (of course I am overlooking the fact that Canon has AF and that the focal length is slightly different). It would be great if some who owns both could post or link pictures or give advice.

Thank you in advance!

I own a Canon 24mm/2.8, which sits at home on the shelf. I have owned the Contax 25mm/2.8, which I sold within a week, and the Contax 28mm/2.8, which I will own forever. If your style of shooting involves either hyperfocal focusing or Liveview focusing, I think that you will love the Contax 28mm. Many find that they can focus manually with the "s" screens or AF confirm chips on adapters, but I am not happy with my results using those methods- ymmv. The manual focus part of the equation is personal.

They are inexpensive enough to try and turn over if you are not happy with the results. My one nit to pick with the lens is comma distortion of off center high contrast points like Christmas lights. Other than that it is wonderful.

Hi David,

Do you have any issues using the Contax 28/2.8 on your 5D2? I read that sometimes
the mirror can hit the lens.

Thanks.

The mirror will occasionally hang up on the back of the lens at infinity on the way down never on the way up on my 5Dc. I would just turn a mm away from infinity and continue as if nothing had happened, and no damage results to lens or body. On the mkii with live view, either I'm never at infinity or it misses, because it has never happened.
