70-200 2.8 is grainy

hi, im shooting with a canon 5D mark II and using a 70-200 2.8 at 1600 ISO with a shutter of 1/250 @ 2.8, indoors, would you expect a lot of graininess in the images when zoomed up in photoshop? is it normal, or could i be having some problems with this lens

ISO 1600 w/ a 5DM2 should be clean. Did you expose properly? Try ETTR!

This has nothing to do with your lens and everything to do with proper exposure. If you over expose just a little, modern digital cameras tend to be more forgiving in the noise department. Over expose a little and fix the exposure in Lightroom or DPP or whatever you use for RAW processing.

The grain comes from under exposing the shot. It has nothing to do with your lens.

My 60D is pretty clean at 1600. ETTR can help, but look at your current exposure. To use ETTR, you will have to either raise ISO, increasing graininess, or lower shutter speed, increasing the chance of motion blur. I would move to a flash and lower ISO to 400 or so. I know that flash is not always an option.

im shooting without a flash and trying to freeze action, if i may ask, what your you consider proper exposure, i did have poor lighting, and even though the image looks clear and exposed properly when zoomed up in photoshop or lightroom, its full of grain, is there a way i can post a raw file here so you may see what I'm talking about?

They mean post an example of what you are talking about that was converted from RAW to JPEG without any post processing, and one that has not been cropped. Tough to tell the issue without seeing an original example.

1600 will still have grain. It should not make any difference in your photos. If you are zoomed in and seeing grain you need to stop pixel peeping. Yes there will be some grain.

This is the trade off in low light and under exposing a tad to freeze the action. You will be able to see close to the same thing even at ISO 100 but mostly only in the shadows if you look at it 1 to 1. A little NR in LR and things should be fine and don't over sharpen.

What metering were you using? It looks like it was metering for the floor instead of the players.

That is a pretty dark hockey arena. 1/250 f/2.8 ISO1600, and it still looks about 1-2 stops underexposed.

You'll need to use at least ISO 3200 in that rink.
