I dropped my hood over a drop off about 100 feet up. I could actually see it but no way to navigate down.

$50.00 for a new one...ouch.

Any other hoods that are close to help me save some money?

Is the 24-105 close enough? Cant find a 3rd party on B&H or Ebay.

Or do I just pony up the cash?

Nikon D850 and a bunch of stuff, I have learned a lot here when I was shooting Canon, staying to keep learning..."Every time I set up I learn something new".

Could you retrieve it with a fishing hook and a weight? Otherwise Adorama has them for $45.

I can feel your pain. I bought this lens used (UY date code), Lens is in excellent condition but the hood is not taken care of and has scratches and inside valvet is in bad shape as well. I was thinking to buy a new one so the lens looks new even with the hood on.....but $50 for a hood seems quite expensive.....presently I am happy with what I have but will like to update with a cheaper option if available.

Thanks, pendu

I would expect that the EW-83H from the 24-105 should work for you. It looks like it is a little smaller though. You can buy then on ebay for as little as $3.51 including free shipping. http://www.ebay.ca …rksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313 (external link)

The EW-83J from the 17-55 might also work and it looks to be closer in size to the EW-83D(24mm 1.4) or EW-83K(24mm 1.4 II)

What I see in Canon's web site is that both the EW-83H and the EW-83J appear to be radically shorter than the EW-83K which is the proper hood for the OP's lens.

I could find no knock-off copies of the EW-83K in a search via Google.

My suggestion is to get a replacement EW-83K. I never use any lens without the proper rigid hood mounted unless the hood is getting in the way of lighting the subject (think extreme close-up photography).
