I was attending an Autocross even today and decided to test the 6 fps in RAW and AI servo. I came up with this little animation. It was shot with my 100-400L. As will see in this animation. not 1 frame was out of focus. I was impressed.

Can’t tell how “GOOD” the AI servo is by the animation but I know it’s very impressive. Need to upgrade to MkIII myself

I think the AF of the:
1D3
5D2
1D2N
are all rubbish

But finally with the 5D3 I have one with great AI Servo.

It really is that good

If I remember correctly, I was on AF Case 3.

Doesn't seem that hard of a shot. My 60D can do this.

I hardly doubt it. Every single frame I shot was in focus and the car was moving at a decent pace.

I bet by 7D could do this! ;)

Then I suspect you need to tweak the af settings. The 5D Mark III has the best servo performance ever with the possible exception of the 1dx.

From the experience I have with the 100-400 My sigma performs just as good on AF as it and with the size of the vehicle at the relative direction it was going I don't see that being a hard shot to pull off and have done similar shots myself. You have to remember AF servo capability has alot to do with lens capability also and my 85mm AF speed is faster than the 100-400.
