I've owned the 7D and while it probably can do this, it is not in the same class as the 5DIII.

We are talking about ability here, not class! ;)

Good point. The 7D would have had 2 more frames in that sequence.

What was the shutter speed? Not much motion it looks like in the individual frames.

Doesn't seem that hard of a shot. My 60D can do this.

Easily.

As much as I like my mkiii and Not wishing to start an argument with the original poster but most recent cameras could replicate those shots. It's a large target centred in the frame and moving in a consistant manner.

I was there on location and it wasn't moving in a consistant manner. It was accelerating out of a corner and heading towards me. I don't think my old T2i could ever come close to replicating all shot in focus.

Unfortunately the 1D3 couldn't do this :( Nor could the 5D2

I like the AI servo on the 5D3 but you can't really tell what you acheived from the gif. To be honest it doesn't look good.

Haven't had time to post anything yet, but I've just been shooting runners at the 5-days orienteering event here in Sweden.
http://www.oringen.se/ (external link)
Even when following the runners in to a few meters away, where I have much bigger problems keeping their head in the viewfinder than anything else, the 7D equipped with the WFT-E5B, a Kensington Bluetooth adapter and a Bluetooth GPS to give the position of each shot, and then also combined with the Canon Extender 1.4X III and the magnificient EF 70-200 mm f/2.8L IS II USM is able to figure out which focus point to use (can't use just one, since I'm not quick enough to keep that right on the target), set the lens and deliver shots where each little eyelash is perfectly focused.

At eight frames/second.

The 7D is also amazingly capable of keeping track of people who are partially obscured by other runners, provided you set it up correctly. The by almost every user bashed all 19 points Servo AF really shines here.

So that the 5D Mark III can keep track of a car, which has a much smoother trajectory than people running on uneven ground and isn't obscured by any other car or such things - well, I would have been surprised if it couldn't.

While I would eventually like a 5d mark III, if it wasn't able to do that car sequence with the tech that is available now and its astronomical price, canon would have to stick with making ink cartridges. For the price this performance and more should be expected

Then you must have had a terrible 1D3. Frankly I don't understand how you can lump the AF of the 5D2 and 1D3 in the same catagory, much less twice in one thread, and the 1D2N to boot!
