The 5D3 probably does, and should, it is 7 years newer and costs 4 times as much. But you have to agree the 1D2N still smokes the 5D2 and similar 9-pt AF systems. Mr. the Kid.

How long did you have the 7D and which AF modes had you tried? Past Equipment | My Personal Gallery

Not saying that AF on 5dmk3 is not good. I did some runs with my son coming on his little bike straight at me and I am impressed with 5dmk3. Now I need to run same tests with my 8 yr old 1dmk2 to see if I get worse or better results. My gut feeling is that 1dmk2 is still going to hold close to 5dmk3. Fuji XT-1, 18-55mm

I have had 2 1D3s and 1 1D4 currently, along with 4 7Ds. I find that the 7D, if set up correctly in the CF settings, and the right mode for the right situation, does quite well. Sure the 1D series is "more confident" and "authoritative" on its AF, but the 7D, sharing the same AI Servo algorithms as the 1D4, does quite well. I had it for a week, can't remember the modes as it was not long after they were released, just used it like I would have done with any other camera. A friend lent it to me as I was thinking of buying one to replace my ageing 1D2N, thought the autofocus was good, not as good as the 2N, but a million times better than my 5D(original). The autofocus wasn't why I didn't buy one though, I just didn't like the IQ, especially when compared to the 5D, and I really wanted to keep the twin cards, for the application I was going to mainly use it. But until the 5D3 was released I was still thinking about it. Cheltenham Wedding Photographer

I was well versed with the 1D series at the point I bought the 7D, and it took about a week or so to go through all the settings and AF modes on the 7D to decide which was which. After one month, I was very comfortable with it. Not the greatest IQ with these pics across the last few years, but that is more glass and settings than sensor. Past Equipment | My Personal Gallery
