Waste of time IMHO. No EVF or OVF, no proper knobs & dials, no built-in flash, probably slow AF and it's pricey too. If I really wanted a small, high quality DSLR replacement, the OM D 5 would top my list (or a Rebel).

They will sell tons of them. sheesh you cant please all the people all the time...

I think they really missed the mark with this thing.

I wish they'd put the sensor deeper into the body so that the EF adapter could have been a lot smaller.

Technically, I believe that sensor cleaning pioneered on the almighty XTi. :p

Also, I believe that the XTi was the first Canon to use the new (at the time) 10.1mp sensor, as it predated the 40d by ~1 year.

The Rebel series was also the first to use the EF-S mount as well (300d).

Not very often, true, but there are definitely technologies that have pioneered on the Rebel series and then trickled their way up.

Yeh, but those things you quoted have not trickled up from the Rebels to 1-series. EF-S mount is not 1-series, so isn't the 10.1 mpix sensor. I don't know about sensor cleaning...I thought the 5d was the 1st.

Body would've been too large if they did that defeating the purpose of creating a compact system. It's already close to the size of a G-Series camera.

I expect a more upscale model in the future and I can wait for that. An EVF and quite a few more lenses are a must before I even consider buying. I think it's a nice 1st effort and I agree, Canon will sell tons of these. Hopefully that makes way for a more upscale model sooner than later.....

Examples of what features migrated from rebels to 1-series.

yeah, not necessarily all the way up to the 1 series, but uphill for sure.
sensor cleaning
SD cards as the only option
swing out LCD

there are others I'm missing at the moment, but you get the idea. Touch screens WILL be in the future for the higher end models. They won't replace buttons and dials, but they'll be there as well as for those who want them. This is the perfect way to get the bugs out.

I personally have no interest in a camera without a viewfinder. At that point, I'll just use my phone.

It looks like the EX90 is bundled in with all kits here in Canada.

Kinda strange how we potentially get the better end of the stick this time, as B&H and the other major American sites don't make mention of whether or not the EX90 is included. We also get a retail version of the white EOS M, which the press release said would be a Canon online store exclusive in the states.

Edit: we also get the 18-55 kit that's seemingly absent from the US. It's only $50 more than the the 22/2.0 package.

Read the original press release, Canon stated that they do not feel the demand is high enough in the states, and thus there will only be the EOS M/22mm kit in the US for $799, Everything else is seperate and it will ONLY be available in "select photo dealers" targeting a higher end market

So yeah, I dunno, they could be right, or they could be wrong and screwing themselves

Sure it makes sense, just don't see any evidence of technology moving from Rebels to 1-series. The sensor cleaning was introduced on the 5d2 camera, which I equate with a pro level camera. The Swing out LCD has not materialized on a pro level camera.

I see new 1-series metering, AF, weather sealing, smarter flash control, fps etc... On the 1-series which never existed on the Rebes, so I don't know if Canon uses the rebel line to prove out technology for the 1-series...just don't see thst evidence.

I never said 1 series, I said the tools the pros use. big difference. ;) Also the 40D had sensor cleaning before the 5Dii came out. The 40D also had live view before the 5Dii came out. Not sure which body got live view first, but I know it wasn't the 5Dii. The 5Dii had the first video in a canon DSLR though.

It's still fairly unusual for us to get treated the same way as the EU market; typically we get exactly what the US gets...at a price premium. This whole thing is rather puzzling, since the mirrorless situation in Canada is more or less identical to the one in the States.

I guess in a strange reversal of fate, Buffalonians are gonna be crossing into here to shop come October.

WIth the 22mm lens, it's interesting. That gives a DSLR sensor on a pocketable camera. But that's where it ends. No viewfinder (holding at arm's length is not stable) and it's not pocketable with a useful lens. I'd almost rather use a Rebel with the new 40mm pancake lens on it.

Yep. EOS Integrated Cleaning System (ICS) (external link)

The ICS was introduced on the consumer EOS 400D camera in the autumn of 2006 and has now spread throughout the range on all models, with the sole exception of the EOS 1000D.
