Hi guys,

I'm in the loop of buying a flash for my Canon 60D, i want a remote flash that can be set to fire when i hit the shutter (IR) so that i can put it anywhere i want in the scene.

Anyone know of a cheaper model and if my 60D can manuever this from the menu itself or if there is another alternative where i put a transmitter on the ttl to remotely stear the external flash?

Thanks.

All these flashes are compatible with the Canon optical wireless system on the T3i/600D, T4i/650D, 60D, and 7D. The cheapest would be a used 420EX, 320EX, or 270EX II.

That is how Canon is able to remotely fire a flash when you take a photo.

http://photonotes.org …lash/index3.html#wireless (external link)

How wireless E-TTL works.

Canon’s wireless E-TTL system employs brief digitally-encoded pulses of light (either visible or infrared, depending on the master unit used) to transmit commands from a master flash unit to a slave unit or multiple slaves. Since the system relies on special digital messages built into the light pulses it’s immune to the problem that regular optical slave flash units have - that of being triggered accidentally in response to other flash units firing. (unless you’re near other photographers who are also using Canon wireless flash units, of course)..............

Its the wireless IR triggering you were referring to in your first post.

I am a rookie, but I really love my 320EX.

This youtube vid sold me on it. (no affiliation)

I recently attended an evening party and there were kids and women swinging bats on a piñata. My 320EX provided enough light for other cameras as well. Anyway, just my two cents

Exactly.

I have the same combo, and it is perfect for 90% of my use.

Cheap, not too large and fully compatible with the 60D's wireless, so I can use it off camera in an emergency.

I use two 430EXs wirelessly controlled by my 60D and adjust the A:B ratios from the camera. Works perfectly at the distances Canon specifies. Canon has a good video on how the 60D wireless system works at:

http://learn.usa.canon.com …s/eos_60d_tutorials.shtml (external link)

You have to scroll through the videos, as the Integrated Speedlite Transmitter video is next to last. Tells you everything you need to know about how the system works.

Ok, it works like the Nissin 622 mark II... and it's even cheaper.
I need to use the built-in flash as a master..

Edit*
Hmm.. i guess i'm wrong, the 430 can be fired without built-in flash.. then this one is a true MASTER flash for a decent price.. right?

I am adding the Yongnuo 565EX. It has nice features and the price is great. For me the best choice if you do not go professional.

Not really understanding what being a professional has to do with purchasing a YN-565?

It's a great flash for the price; don't professionals want a good deal?

The 430EX can be used either in the hot shoe, in which case the pop-up cannot be used as a master for wireless off-camera control. Alternatively, the 430EX is set to slave mode and used off camera under control of the wireless 60D pop-up master. The 430EX cannot function as a master, but the 60D pop-up can. I don't know the Nissin 622 at all.

There were reports of higher than normal failure rates with the early units of YN-565EX. The last thing you want on a paid job is unreliable gear. However, those issues seem to have been resolved now.

I'm not following.. been looking at a few youtube videos showing the 430 being used as a "master" meaning that the pop-up flash does not have ti fire the flash.. but just be opened.

I need this clarified..

Can i fire off the 430 external without the pop-up firing it's flash.
I can use the nissin as external but the builtin pop-up flash needs to fire off a flash inorder for the nissin flash to fire.

Look at these videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn1xioiYgpg (external link) 7D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruQBbenSlM0 (external link) 60D

And in the tutorial at 2:30 he says that the built-in flash doesent have to fire in order to have the 430 fire external.
