just bought a used 24-70 L from ebay, it is claimed as like new condition, but there are obvious scratches on the surface, not the glass. I see a red spot near the red ring, is it normal? does it indicate a refurbished? Is there anything else I need to pay attention to?

Thank you very much!

Did it have pictures listed in the auction?

Condition has a few options on ebay, "new", "new other", "used", and for parts, not working...

If it was listed as new, you can send it back. My guess is that it was listed as used. If the wear wasn't in the pictures, you can send it back for a refund. If not, see if it works fine, and use it.

Thanks. It is posted as used but like new. The scratches on the surface is acceptible, just feel being cheated and I am also afraid that it was refurbished.

red spot near the red ring should be the hood mount point. check the mounting surface, if one of the indentations has red stuff in, that's what canon has started using on refurbished lenses.

Yeah red marker on the bottom of the lens mount means refurbished, but the red dot by the L-ring is only for mounting the hood. Obvious scratches on a supposedly "like new" lens, though, doesn't really match up. Does it shoot alright?

tried few shots indoors, didn't find obvious defects. For such a used lens, what should I particularly pay attention to?
