To set aperture in manual mode you must hold the Av/exposure compensation button and turn the main dial at the same time. A Canon Tech told me I could work around this by pressing the Q button, go to the aperture screen, and set the aperture there. I need to know if I can set the aperture this way BEFORE I buy this camera. Can you please see if this will work? Is there another work-a-round where I do not have to hold the button and turn the dial?

I presume the Q button on the 550D works like the Set button on the 500D and brings up the quick settings? If so yes it can, on the 500D I would press the Set button, use the 4 way scroller to highlight Av and then turn the wheel to set.

That procedure will work.

If you want to learn more about the Canon 550D/T2i. You can easily download the instruction manual in PDF format. (external link)

d123 & DC Fan, Thank You!!! I am unable to hold the button & turn the dial due to lack of finger motor so if that did not work there would be no sense in buying the camera. Again, Thanks so much and thank you DC Fan for the link.:)

I always did it that way, I couldn't remember the way of holding the Av/exposure button at first (didn't concentrate on that part of the manual obviously) so I used the Q button. Most of the time I used either AV or TV with my 550D, I didn't really start using M until I'd got a 7D and that was just done with the rear wheel.

You might consider the newest rebel, as you can just do everything via the touch screen, I believe.

I also only use the rear screen and quick setup function, it's probably one of the easiest interfaces around, it takes just the thumb and fingertip to change almost any setting you need to while shooting.
