EF 24-70mm f2.8 for indoor hoops?

Hi folks,
I will start shooting my son's 5th grade basketball team after christmas this year. Last year I used my 10D with a 35-128mm f3.5-5.6 and I was not real happy with the results. The courts are poorly lighted at best and it seemed that the focus would be off about half the time with that lens. The courts the teams play on have very little seating so I will shoot from just off the court for most of the shots.

This year I will have a 5D and I don't want to spend time switching between primes. I know that I will lose a little sharpness, but would the 24-70 be a good choice?

It's as good as you will get with a zoom lens most likely. I had to shoot basket ball in the film days using a 50mm 1.8 and ISO 3200 film, you may want to try a flash if you are allowed.

I think that is the way I am going to go.....I will be able to offset some of the cost with the canon rebate of $135.
