Anyone know whether the 5Dc sensor is better than the 7D sensor for long exposure noise?

Wanting to do some more long exposures, but the 7D sensor seems to get quite noisy for longer exposures, and then the noise reduction seems to make everything a bit soft.

Tempted to pick up an older 5Dc for long exposures and timelapses. Thoughts?

I own both and yes, the 5Dc will be better for long exposures, the 7D is a noisy beast!!

I don't know your workflow but I must say since I started using LR4 the 7D have become far more usable for me, the first few years I had it I seldom shot with it due to noise, even in "normal" exposures at low ISO (compared to my 5Dc, 5d2, 5d3, 1DS3), using LR4 to convert from RAW to JPG has made a huge difference and my 7D now sees duty for more often, especially when the crop is needed!

Having said that the 5Dc is a magic camera capable of producing great images, I still use it for everyday use even though I have newer bodies in the stable.

How long are you talking about? Film doesn't have a time-related noise problems. It does suffer from reciprocity breakdown if you are going to several minute exposures, though. Bracket! And good film cameras are a lot cheaper than a 5Dc.

I have been thinking the same thing on wanting to pick up a 5Dc for long 25-30 sec exposures for stars. The last few days I have been looking for a ISO noise test comparing a 5Dc and a ASP-c sensor like the 7D,T2I,60D, ect models. There are plenty of test for 5D2 vs ASP-C or 5D2 vs 5D3 but not to many 5Dc tests, anyone out there know of any?

T2i Gripped, Tokina 11-16mm, Sigma 30mm, Canon 60mm.
