Shot a friend who had the idea to shoot on the roof. Comes time to go up there, she sees the ladder and flips out. Okay chicken, it was your idea to shoot on the roof, don't tell me you're afraid of heights now. We got her up there though, and the shots came out pretty good I think.

Anyhow, here's a few shots, comments and critique always welcome. Shot with only sunlight, mainly because I don't own lighting. There's more on Flickr if anybody wants to take a peek...

i like 4 best, don't care for that big AC unit in the background, remove that and they'd all be great.

there's a tiny bit too much skin smoothing, IMHO, I think its leading to the photo looking a little flat. I love the model! Great tats!
Other than that I think it's a great set!

Thanks guys. Rick, the AC unit...after over 24 years of being a maintenance mechanic and being on countless rooftops, I think I'm a bit blind to what's on a roof. I didn't pay much attention to the unit, kinda thought about it while processing, but in the end I think it really didn't bother me enough to get rid of it. After seeing your post I went back and edited it out of a shot, didn't really make much difference to me as to how the shot looked.

That's just me though, I'm generally blind to stuff like that from seeing it my whole life, I'm sure others have the same opinion as you do though.

Skin smoothing...some of it was intentional, shots like 5 and 6 I kinda did it on purpose. Other shots are just the way I wanted them. After seeing them over and over again though I think I could have done with a little less, but to be honest I sometimes like the look, and with these the ones that may seem over-done really don't bother me. I can see exactly what you're saying though.

In number 8, move the car out a little further where its not cut off, and you have a winning shot there

The skin smoothing is noticabe. But my nit pick would be stop shooting her square to the camera. It makes people look bigger than they really are. Never a good thing when shooting women!! Have her turn some to either direction, it will be so much more flattering to her figure. You can really see the difference from the first few to the last few.

i like them all!

i had to go back and look for the cut-off car. it WOULD look better if you could see a bit more of it. it seems to just fit so well with the outfits...

not sure how it works but EVERYONEs portraits look so good. mine still look like theyre shot on 400 kodacolor...

yours look very good lighting wise. you DONT NEED any other lights!

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

Thanks everyone.

The car was there because Roy Varga was there shooting, and he was using the car, couldn't move it. (and in retrospect I should have at least introduced myself and gave him my card, could have been a huge "in" into that type of shooting) I couldn't stage Larry and Collette anywhere else to get the whole car in the shot because there was this ridiculously huge real estate sign that was in the shot otherwise. I could have tried to clone it out but it was huge, and the surrounding area didn't give me much in the way of cloning material. Plus to get the whole car in the shot meant the had to be further back, which meant I either had to zoom or move forward, and it kinda killed the angle I was looking for. It was Larry's idea to do those shots on the edge, and it was a damn good idea, but there was a lot of stuff making it hard to find the perfect spot.

I'm looking at the shots now trying to find good ones but it looks like the ones where I could actually get rid of the sign the posing isn't all that spectacular. I worked on one yesterday with just Larry, worked out pretty good, except I didn't get rid of the sign...

Skin smoothing, yup, I guess it's a personal opinion thing, I like the shots, but I can see where people would think they're over-done. I'll keep it in mind the next time I'm processing to not get so heavy-handed with it.

Posing, well, I'm no people-pro, so the little stuff I learn as I go. So far people have been very pleased with my shots, and I like them most of the time, so it's up to other photographers to comment and make me see things that would make improvements. Which is why I always want critique on my shots. Can't get better if I don't know where the problems are.

Lighting was all God and a little processing trickery.

I love all of them but agree with Rick that #4 is the winner. On the Larry shot above one can see your shadow ;)

Excellent use of ambient light!

What do you guys think about this redo of the second shot?? I basically just thinned the shot, and I can tell it's different but I'm wondering if you didn't see the original would this one look better...
