I am wondering if anyone with a 70-200mm F4L with a Tripod mount ring could give me some dimensions as far as the internal diameter is concerned. The reason I ask is that I have access to a CNC milling machine, and since I am saving for the 70-200 and I want to get it ASAP I could make a ring that would fit the barrel to save about 100+ dollars. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks tons ahead of time,
Riley

When I had that lens I found that I did'nt need the ring,it is not a heavy lens.In fact it is 245grams less than my 24-70L.:D

I have the ring that Gene refers to, I use it lots, especially for macro work with my tubes and monopod. It also gets used when using my TC some times. In really good light it is not needed but cand sure help if you have shaky hands.

Go ahead and buy a Canon Tripod Collar. You'll get some of your $ back if you ever sell the lens w/collar. Try to make your own and it'll look "funny" and you run the risk of damage to the lens if you tighten it too much.

Actually there was a post here a short time back where one of our members made his own tripod ring and turned out very well ... I just don't remember the section it was in.
