I wasn't even out birding, but I saw this one hovering over a field hunting, near Crockett California. I was lucky to at least have my 100-400 on my 7D on the seat next to me, so I pulled over and shot these across my van through the open passenger window. I didn't even have time to change the camera settings, but I think they still came out pretty decent.

Nice in flight shots, pretty much, any photo you can get of a kestrel is a good one!

Haven't seen the couple of kestrels here up close enough for photo's but got to watch them hunt the local airport field a few times this year on my way back from taking in my recyclables.

very nice catch, I end up with the same shooting airliners at SFO, catch a few birds while waiting on airliners to come in.
