So I am in the process of transitioning from hobbyist to side-job photographer. For now, targeting family portraits, senior pics, kids, engagement, that type of work. No weddings. FWIW, I live in a suburb of St. Louis, MO.

Here's what I have done so far, in terms of "marketing":
--Created FB photo business page, promoting it to my relatively few FB friends and my wife's much more substantial FB friend list;
--Created main webpage (Zenfolio); worked on SEO issues such that if I search "family portraits" or "senior pictures" and my town I am on the first page, or second, of search results;
--Posting ads on Craigslist every few days; and
--Posted ad on Ebay classifieds.

Anything obvious that I am missing (that is low-cost)? I have been getting a fair number of leads through the FB efforts. In contrast, I am getting the sense both from my own ads and watching other ads that Craigslist, in our market, is not a very good source of leads.

This whole marketing thing is new to me. I hadn't even thought of CL until I read another thread on here and had a "duh" moment. I just want to make sure there aren't any other similarly obvious/"duh" things I should be doing but am not yet.

My quite modest little gear list: 50D gripped | 135L | 50 1.4 | 50 1.8 | 85 1.8 | 28-105 3.5-4.5 | Speedlite 420EX | 2 Yongnuo 460ii | stands, 2 umbrellas, one softbox

Never forget word of mouth, it might not get you tons of work but it's better than nothing. In general conversation ALWAYS mention your photography work to people you meet and these days business cards are cheap as chips if you find the right place (if you haven't done so already) It makes you look more...professional. Talking to people may only get you a job once out of fifty people you talk to but that one job will put for meals on the table for a week ;)

Good luck!
