15-85. I got one for a trip to yellowstone and I was very impressed. Very sharp and very good colors. Range is great.

Another vote for 15-85. Thanks for replying!

i-G12,
Welcome to the DSLR world. I shot with my G12 for about a year and a half and learned a lot. Great P&S as a stepping stone to a DSLR. I struggled a bit with which lenses to buy when I got my 60D and ended up with the 15-85 and the 70-300L. I couldn't be happier.
I'm not sure the 70-300L would be long enough for your Africa trip. You can use the search feature here and check out the experiences of others who made a similar trip but from my own reading on POTN, they tend to like the longer lenses. Your idea about renting the 100-400L sounds promising.

Anyway, for the future, as you can afford it, the 15-85 and the 70-300L is a decent two lens set up. Others have and love the 17-55 f/2.8 as well. I like the slightly wider end on the 15-85 for landscapes but it does come down to personal preference. I live in Florida and I shoot mostly outdoors so the variable aperture isn't an issue for me. I use a flash for any indoor stuff I shoot.

I hope you have a great trip and I look forward to your photo posts upon your return.

The 15-85mm is the best zoom lens I've used on a crop. I started out with the 28-135, then went to the 24-105, borrowed and tried a 17-55 (Awesome lens but I don't shoot in low light and liked having 12% more on the wide end and 36% more on the long end) and finally, picked up a 15-85. It is on my camera almost always unless I am shooting macro. The IS is fantastic and the focal range is perfect for me. I rarely need to use my Sigma 10-20 for landscapes anymore because 15mm always seems to be wide enough. You can pick a new one up (Grey Market) from Adroama for $699 and with how much use you'll get out of it, its an awesome deal. It's also extremely sharp!
