Suddenly my Edit in Photoshop no longer displays the dialogue box that has the options to use Lightroom adjustments before passing the file on the CS 6.
It also no longer creates the psd or tiff file but rather opens the CR2 file in CS6.
I set up the second option (Open in external editor) and pointed that that to PS and that works as expected by opening the dialogue box and creating the psd file in PS.

Both are opening CS6 PS.

Any suggestions?

You should not get that (since ACR7.1 is the same editor under the hood as LR4.1).
Your edits will be applied.

I guess you recently upgraded ACR?

If you want a .tif or .psd, either save (not "Save as"!) from PS or use the secondary editor.

Thanks Rene.
I guess some updates came it.
This is the first time I'm seeing the behavior since I started using LR since version 1.0
I am using the secondary editor.

If I save in PS does it create the psd or tiff even though the file that is currently open a CR2. file.
And if it does, does LR automatically stack it when it returns to LR?

Sorry for all questions. This is new behavior to me so I didn't want to mess with over writing a RAW file.

Is it possible that you are opening it as a Smart Object? That would show that type of behavior, I believe, if you have compatible versions of ACR and LR.

How do you open as smart object?
My workflow has not changed.

"Edit as a Smart Object" is something you can choose when you right-click an image in Lightroom.

I'm not sure of all the variables in the "Edit in Photoshop" process, but it sounds like you are "missing a dialog", maybe -- try Using the Edit/Preferences "Reset all warining dialogs" button and see if it gets that behavior back. It sounds like you maybe chose the "Use Anyway" option in opening a Raw file and had selected "Don't show again".

I checked, and the "Use Anyway" option does in fact open the CR2 file in Photoshop (via the ACR engine I presume) and does not create a tiff/psd copy in LR automatically. I've just never delved into this behavior!

Anyway do that "Reset all warning dialogs" and it should get you back.

ok Did everything that Tony recommended but the problem persist.
Definitely not using Smart Object.
Reset all dialogue warnings and restarted LR

Weird

So after you Reset the dialogs, when you did an Edit in Photoshop, are you saying the dialog giving you the choice did not appear?

If so, strange, it does it for me, but just now I noticed that the LR4.1 I have on my laptop shows a different dialog!

One difference may be that I have a slightly different version of ACR 4.6 on my laptop's CS3, but that shouldn't affect you!

In the meantime you may want to check into the Adobe Lightroom Users forum, or another dedicated Lightroom forum where experts hang out to help us!

Thanks for taking the time to look.

I just tried your suggestion of just saving the file not save as and PS creates the -edit.psd file.
When you look in LR it's there and stacked with original.

That's totally new behavior but thanks for pointing out.

Yes, it should.

If you use LR4.1 and ACR7.1, you won't get a dialog if you use "Edit in…". You should get a dialog if you're using the secondary editor (I think)

In windows there's something funky going on. I had ACR 7.1 in LR for a while and that behavior just started happening.
I checked with my buddy who also has CS6 and LR 4.1 both with ACR 7.1 and he still gets the dialogue box.
We're both on Win 7 64-bit.

Ah LR4.2 puts it back to the old behavior.
