Just purchased a 7D from a member on this site... wanted to upgrade for the AF performance and also the ability to MA my front focusing 85mm lens. I forgot one key factor....

...Compact flash! Holy crap these cards are twice the price of SD  All I ever use is a 16gb sandisk ultra for my 60D and never have had any issues filling one up but was going to upgrade to a 32gb but not now sheesh. I'll give my 16gb to my wife for her S100 which will be a good upgrade for her (4gb now)... but now I gotta factor in spending another 40 bucks on one 16gb card yikes.

This card will be fine unless you do extended bursts, perhaps.

You bought a $1100+ camera and now you are complaining about spending another $40? You can always buy a cheap CF card, but, you get what you pay for.

These arguments are generally annoying. :(

What one spends for X does not have any bearing about whatever else they might need to purchase to complete the "package".

$40 is $40 regardless of past purchases and their amounts...

Sorry, but I had to say it. These replies never made any sense to me. I hear it regarding car purchases too. I buy a Z06, and then when I need to buy aftermarket stuff, people always try to throw the invariable "you spent $52K on the car, what's the big deal about spending $250 on window tint, or $900 on tires", etc. The way I was able to afford the car back in 2003 was because I saved $40 here, $200 there, etc.

There's a difference between buying aftermarket parts for a car and a memory card for a camera. Car parts are accessories. You can live without those. One has to justify that purchase.

On the other hand, a memory card is a necessity. Your camera won't function without one. You have to factor in the price when you buy a camera. What good is a camera if you had not planned on buying a memory card for it?

I agree with Teamspeed.

I didn't buy a 1,100 dollar camera. I will end up getting around 700 for my 60D plus or minus and I bought my 7D for 1,050 and it has a canon grip which I will sell for 100.

Thus making it a $250 upgrade. Add in the cost of switching memory types makes it an expense that slipped my mind.

I'll just carry my laptop around and tether shoot straight to it. Nothing like adding a few extra lbs to what I'm carrying haha.

Take one shot... run home and download it. Go take another shot... run home and download it. Etc... Sounds like fun, huh? It's probably worth $40 for a memory card!

OP, look for two card "package" deals... maybe a couple 8GB instead of one 16GB card. Sometimes you'll find better deals that way.

And be glad memory cards are so cheap these days... I remember paying a whole lot more than $40 for one 2GB card just a few years ago.

I am discussing this statement: "you are complaining about buying a $40 card when you already spent $1100 on the camera". I am talking about the economics of your statement, not the necessity of your statement. If you had said something to the effect of "yes, you need to spend yet more money on accessories to complete your kit", then this would be a different situation.

Technically, you don't need CF cards either to use the camera. If you tether for your studio work, you don't need cards. So one could argue that my analogy holds, CF cards could very well be considered accessories and not necessities in some cases.

One could buy a CF<->SD adapter too, the one that works with the Eye Fi card would work with SDHC cards (Semco Extreme Adapter), but I would suggest just getting CF cards.

I remember paying $125 for a 128MB compact flash card oh about 12 years ago. I remember it was $1 per MB haha.

Your analogy might hold, but, not in this case. OP is looking to store pics...not tether shoot! So, in this case, it is a necessity.
